Threat posed by goblin sieges
« on: September 26, 2014, 04:32:34 pm »

Are goblins only really threatening when they have large numbers of archers/crossbowmen, dangerous mounts, or both? What's the largest size they can come with?

So far they've been coming with maybe 60 - 100 goblins, and haven't been a match at all for my military (30 or 40 legendary fighters, rather poorly equipped though). Fortress wealth was around 800 000 for the longest time, though it just shot up to 2.5 million due to an artifact adamantine mechanism.

Does wealth affect what kinds of forces siege you?

A legendary and agile dwarf can take on around 50 goblins easily in my fort. a ten man squad in copper mail with silver maces absolutely decimates the pathetic 40-50 goblin sieges I've been getting. I haven't seen any well trained goblins yet, though. I wouldn't mind a option to give equipment buffs to sieges. All goblins entering your map suddenly have full iron gear and weapons!

Have gotten Goblin sieges in full iron gear and weapons, well trained too. Depends on the world whenever your enemy is strong or weak, really.

The best way to make them actually challenging and fun is to use a bunch of weaker dwarves, not legendary fighters, not novices, maybe experts. Suit them up in only bronze or iron, and set them on the goblins.

That's whi I have modded 2 extra goblin civilizations, one of which can come at you in full steel, and is 50pct larger/stronger/tougher than normal.

If that isn't enough - go find the Fortress Defence mod :)

I had a siege with 10 cave dragons and several elite goblins and weaponmasters which killed off 50 highly trained dwarves once. Sadly even with the few times Ive seen them going on cave dragons the goblins seemed pretty unimpressive in actual battle.

The only time goblins are really dangerous is when they come in on strong mounts, like ogres or cave dragons.

Well the grand master goblins with scourges can be pretty dangerous on thier own. They are unlikely to kill all your dwarves considering most other goblins have low skill which means they are often quickly swarmed.

What the goblins are missing more than super-mega-awesome armor weapons is the skill to justify their position in the goblin society.  Their skill levels should be somewhat higher if they are constantly at war.

Considering goblins aren't dying of age or of malnutrition, they have all the time to train their skills, assuming long enough worldgen.

So i guess when you're playing in a 500 years old world you're going to have much more dangerous goblin weaponmasters filling the invaders ranks than if you're playing in a 30 years old world.

Hmmm, modding what is usually a pushover encounter into a horrific tentacle monster... considering this is a board where it isn't seen as the slightest bit unusual that people took the idea of beards being sentient and ended up with dwarves charging into battle holding axes with their beards, I'd say there's a good chance he wasn't joking.

When these tentagobs frappe the brains of every dwarf civ in the world gen it will of course have been inev-
