The dwarves with grasping beards was hilarious. It doesn't change much game wise, but to think of a dwarf punching a goblin in the face with his beard, swinging a battle axe with it, even feeding his child with it, that's a pure Dwarf Fortress thought.

Heck, one of the best parts of the forums is just going on sig-wanders and laughing at the craziness you find. That's how I first saw the beard grasping, and numerous other hilarious, or awful, or hilariously awful things that take place here.

Just give Gobs the reactions to make steel and a Natural Skill level in combat skills. Any training they go through will be on top of an unassailable base skill, and they'll have a higher chance of coming clad in steel. Or alter them to be closer to Orcs, and give them different castes so you have even more variety to worry about.

I just make gobs more than three times their original size. Now my dwarves are fighting bugbears and trolls as big as giants.

That's definitely one option. I wasn't going to go all the way to physical mutations of that caliber, but if you wanna add in attacks, go right ahead.

Goblins are already rather difficult in most of my forts, but imagine invading bogeymen?
Boogeymen are smaller than dogs and fast.  They thrive on you being isolated while they have allies.  A few decently armed dwarves would win, and naked well trained dwarves would wreck them.  But you could mod in fast little pack hunters.
