Seeing as how it's a kickstarter thing (with an 09/15 delivery date) I'd say the later.

No, Banner Saga is a single player branching story RPG.  There is a FTP / PTW tactical spinoff that is just the combat part of the game with a ladder / leader board.

Not sure which this is supposed to be more like.

I don't mind linear campaign too much but it also would benefit from allowing "downtime" from the campaign. For example there's this Fire Emblem game I played (not sure which one, Gameboy Advance I think), more or less linear, no random encounters AFAIK, yet at some point you're given the option to explore a ruin (or more) as many times as you want going to deeper and more difficult levels.

Even Final Fantasy Tactics was super-linear but you could just hang around and have random battles and increase skills and stuff. Pretty sure the GBA version of FFT2 FFT Advance had limited quests but I'm not sure, I heard somewhere at some point there were random unlimited quests. Hm, now I have to make sure

One reason I haven't got BS yet is because I'm not too fond of games that tell me I have a limited number of battles to fight.

it wouldn't work with unlimited random battles.  part of the engagement in the story comes from the ideas that the battles are hard, have permadeath, and it tries to prevent save-scumming.

If someone bites it, it has repercussions to the story.

Thats why the unlimited random battle game is a standalone F2P product.

Well, it would be nice if that one wasn't multiplayer only.

Maybe a skirmish mode with AI opponents.
