My naked military
« on: September 26, 2014, 12:28:02 pm »

So I recently read about issues with military uniforms and civilian clothing getting in the way of each other and that you better set uniforms to replace clothing, so I did. Right afterwards the military commander Urist McPervert proceeded to rip off all his clothes and walk around with nothing but the leather cloak I designated as uniform, complaining about how people look at him funny. :/

So is this expected that, if you tell them to replace clothing, they wear _nothing_ but what you specified in the uniform? Or is this a bug?

That's normal. "Replace" means they don't wear anything that isn't specified as part of their uniform, which is a good way to make sure your dwarf isn't trying to wear a regular shirt that would conflict with a chain shirt. If you want him to wear civilian clothes, you can either assign them to the uniform or go back to the "Over clothes" setting.

I use one of two methods around this problem:

1) Periodically station my squads in my armor stockpile room, go in the equipment menu and set each of them to "Replace clthng", then unpause and let them run around and throw off their clothes and pick up the armor they're supposed to be wearing. Then I go back to the equipment menu and set each one  back to 'Over clthng" and unpause and wait for them to run around and pick up half the clothes they just dropped on the floor. Then I unstation them and let them go on their merry way, properly dressed.

2) Assign uniforms that include clothing as well as armor. You have to make sure you don't assign too much clothing or the armor might not fit. I typically would just do a shirt, trousers, and socks. Then just set them to 'Replace clthng". Given a sufficient supply of clothing, this makes sure that dwarves who don't have greaves, boots or mail shirts still are covered.

The root cause of this problem is usually someone slowly carrying a very heavy bin of armor from the armor stockpile to the forge to pick up the helm that just got made, and half your dwarves are assigned armor that's in the bin, so they can't get it to put it on. I now make my armor stockpiles have zero bins to avoid this particular problem. But they are still very lax about actually wearing the armor assigned to them unless I remind them by stationing them somewhere. And the most convenient place for that is in the armor stockpile.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

When set to replace the selected military uniform will replace ALL clothing. This means that if you assign a uniform containing only a sock to a dwarf, said dwarf will only wear a sock.

For armour add for example shirt, trousers, shoes plus maybe cloak and hood. I even use cloak in place of shirt, but this admittedly looks weird, like my dwarves had dressing robes over bare chests, freshly from bathroom (pretending to bath, which they don't). But dwarves are weirdos anyway.

I had to think about whether I should see if someone needed help explaining the military screen or not due to some (hopefully) obvious reasons.

So I tried to be smarter this time and assigned all relevant clothing parts to my dwarf military with mediocre success (with uniform set to replace). While none of them is complaining about lack of clothing anymore, they just don't pick up their armor at all. I tried many things and even now have beds, dining room, food, armor, weapon and ammo stockpiles right in the barracks, so they can have a happy life as military dwarfs, yet most of them refuse to put on their armor. My captain for example rather wears his tattered pig tail cap than the shiny exceptional copper helm right next to him as assigned. -.-

You'll need to make sure the helm is the only head item in his uniform and then set the uniform to replace regular clothing, caps and helmets are mutually exclusive.

That is exactly what I did, and some of the dwarfs actually accepted it and are wearing the helm properly (but not trousers or something else). And now after several in game month and a few attack orders he is still wearing his tattered cap.

My guess is that I am either missing something here, or the entire equip system is very borked.

It may be just me, but I've noticed dwarves with assigned uniforms update their equipment only at the start of their active duty, whetever it is a station order, scheduled training/guarding and even then it's a bit iffy, only station order having good chance of ordered dorfs picking up gear. Though with kill orders the military dwarves may or may not update their equipment, most likely grabbing weapons or getting bolts just to make their response to such order faster.

Also, you may want to see if their uniform settings are set to exact. If it's on partial, they wear pretty much anything! So that might explain why your dwarf is still wearing his cap.

My military is permanently training, but they did pick up steel mail shirts I forged.

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?

Military equipment is buggier than ever. my dwarves will only equip items that are freshly made. As soon as it goes to a stockpile they refuse to use it. Hence why I have something like 600 leather lowboots and 15 dwarves complaining of having no shoes. I tried reassigning the uniform to make them strip, and ended up with 15 extremely dangerous and extremely naked dwarves who would soon be bashing in the skulls of everyone who blushed.

Ah, I remember the first time I accidentally sent warriors into combat naked without knowing it. The Riddled Assualts were pretty funny...

Remove the civ clothing and see if it works. Also make a point of NOT storing either weapons or armor in bins. Just dont. Containers suck ever since the hauling changes.

So I did some !Science! yesterday and figured a few things out:

1. If you create a squad with a uniform that means dwarfs will equip that uniform if they feel like it.
2. You need to assign the uniform _again_ to those squads in m->e->U at which point they will actually run and equip that stuff. Repeat each time you change the uniform.
3. You need to put boots into the uniform list 2 times, because dwarfs don't know that they have 2 feet.
4. Dwarfs have a very short range when looking for equip to wear. I'd guess like 20-30 blocks (pathing distance).
5. Dwarfs just love to wear tattered rags, because they'd been wearing them for years already, and you don't just change what you did for years, do you?!
