Stupid dorf challenge
« on: September 25, 2014, 12:09:59 pm »

7 of the most useless dwarves have been selected and thrown out into the wilderness with:

10 x Cats (male)
1 x Steel anvil
1 x wood training axe
2 x iron bars
265 x granite (for memorial slabs only!)

They have vowed never to mine, farm, fish, gather plants, hunt, trade or build with stone or wood (excepting wooden beds and stone slabs). Unfortunately your girlfriend's brother is one of the seven (pick one at random) and she doesn't want him to starve to death. Your task is to head out into the world and scrounge up food and metal items for them to use before they die stupidly.

1. Start fort (1x1 nano fort using dfhack embark-tools). Bring stone for memorial slabs!
2. Retire fort quickly.
3. Start adventurer.
4. Use adventurer to get enough food and metal items to the fortress for them to (hopefully) last a year.
5. Retire adventurer in a nearby dwarf site
6. Unretire fort and run for a year under above restrictions.
7. Retire fort.
8. Unretire adventurer.
GOTO 4

You must always use the same adventurer. If he dies, it's game over.
If the designated 'girlfriend's brother' dies it's game over.

That's the challenge. :P

I tried it out myself, didn't do so well, technically haven't failed yet. Feel free to join in and post your results.

HELPFUL HINTS: Food rots / disappears. Good luck finding a way around that! ;)
Set a population cap! (I had it capped at 18).

Asob Cerolberul is a pretty, but useless, middleaged female dwarf. Unfortuately she's also the older sister of my girlfriend. Somehow I have been volunteered to keep her alive. See she's been sent off to a doomed little fortress of useless eccentrics. 'Outpost Limultishis (Goldspirals)'.

According to a letter from Asob the outpost is spending its time turning logs into charcoal at their wood furnace. I ask my girlfriend 'and?'. And she replies 'and nothing. That's all they're doing." I obviously need to get a move on if they are to survive the first year.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

I get there, and it's as bad as I thought it would be. I drop off 47 plump helmets and a few weapons I'd picked up along the way.
I go back and trade for 80 more plump helmets and four copper chainmails. Hopefully that will be enough for one year.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

First season.
Melted down weapons and armor.
Made copper and bronze bridge over the river.
Built forge. Built small metal roof - enough to cover 5 beds.

SUMMER ARRIVES

Forged a copper barrel. Can't use it for alcohol. They keep putting food in it. :/

AUTUMN ARRIVES

WINTER ARRIVES

SPRING ARRIVES

Somehow Asob survived the first year, but I obviously severely underestimated how much food they needed. Three dwarves starved to death. D:

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

So, my girlfriend got another letter from her sister Asob. Things are getting desperate. They are obviously even more stupid than I had planned on. I pull on my adventuring gear and head off into the wilds again.

hmmm neither gathering wild plants nor making and hunting with crossbows is forbidden, Butcher the Wagon Animals make bone bolts and an Iron Crossbow and hope you get lucky.

Why couldn't my vampire Hammerer eat someone useless, like a migrant? Instead, she went after my only gemcutter.. but sadly there were no witnesses, so I convicted someone's pet duck as the murderer.  It got off easy, with no beatings or jail time.  >.<

Lol, you're right I forgot to explicitly forbid those. But, no, they aren't allowed either.

What I did do was set a population cap of 18 and a strict population count of 36.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

I find my way to the Granitemuscle Hillocks and pick up some plump helmets. I drop of 90 plump helmets at Goldspiral then head back for more. Picked up a bunch more from acemetal hillocks. Dropped them off too. That might be enough.

I need to deliver a lot of metal as well. I decide to investigate some of the more dangerous areas...

I head towards some dark pits and soon encounter a number of goblins. They were poorly trained and cowardly, I soon defeated them. Weighed down by my loot I struggle back to the pathetic camp of Goldspiral.

Despite there being a decent bridge across the river, my companion the macedwarf decides to go swimming. It doesn't go well. I collect his items and dump them in the camp with everything else.

I take the opportunity to head back to a local village and rest up for a while.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

The food. It is all vanished. How? Why? I have no idea. The death of everyone in this camp is now inevitable.

Also, the adventurer's girlfriend totz left him.

-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

Lol, that was fun. :P Things I learned:

* Dwarves eat more than you'd think.
* Meat rots really, really, fast when you drop it on the ground in adventurer mode (any solutions?)
* Maybe plump helmets rot too when dropped in adventure mode? Just not as fast?

I think I should have dropped the metal _first_ then the food second. That way it might have still have been around for fortress mode.

Can you setup a food stockpile in fort mode, then plop the food there in adventurer?

You can, and I did, but it doesn't seem to help the food stop rotting.

You can also give food to the dwarves in the fortress while in Adventurer mode. I don't know what happens when you go back to fortress mode though. I haven't got that far. :P

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Started again. Fortress Mesiruzol "Showeroil"
Civilization Umstizudib "The Sizzling Syrups"

Start 7th Slate

Recruit two followers. Deliver 67 plump helmets to fortress - give them to individual dwarves there. Go to nearby hillocks - ceilingtest. Get more plump helmets, go back.

Travelling further afield looking for metal. Met wicked ogre wrestler, defeated him but didn't get any credit for the kill! I was with two companions and we all did our part (one dying) but I guess the other companion got the killing blow in.

At the abandoned fortress of Cudgelpost I found a single dwarf child and a store full of goodies. I raided for iron, copper and zinc items.

Back at Showeroil I dropped off all the spare weapons and armor I had collected. My left arm no longer works well enough to use a shield, so I dropped that as well. The shield, not the arm.

-+-+-+-+-+-

Meanwhile, back at the fortress, three of the seven dwarves have wandered away into the wilderness. Vutok Naredem - the expedition leader and my current 'keep alive' target - is still here, however.

Bizzarely the two iron bars they had have disappeared. I 'let' them use a charcoal bar to make their forge. Of the 180 or so plump helmet I delivered, about 53 remain. What happened to the rest? I guess the three dwarves who walked away could have taken them.

SUMMER ARRIVES

Eww! The latest migrants have lice!

Made a copper throne, a copper table and a tiny roof - enough to cover five squares. Made a +steel helm+ and a chain steel leggings for the adventurer to use.

AUTUMN ARRIVES

46 plump helmets left at the beginning of autumn.

Merchants! We don't need those scum.

Migrants arrive. I steal all their battle axes and melt them down.

WINTER ARRIVES

Just 20 plump helmets left! 17 greedy citizens to chomp their way through them. Everything metal is melted down. I had enough to expand the tiny roof a bit and now have six beds.

SPRING ARRIVES!

Yay! The 'fortress' lasted one year without anyone starting to starve. (Although, there is absolutely no food left now...)

Got some news on that one, and it's a little weird. It turns out that dwarves are secret horders. If you give them plump helmets, and they aren't in a container, they keep them in their inventories throughout the dwarf fortress turn. I'm not sure if they can actually eat them or not. If you give them the container _and_ the plump helmets they will (may?) drop both when you start the dwarf fortress turn. So although I thought

actually there was a lot left with the secretive dwarf food hoarders. The equivalent of those people who rush to the supermarket and buy up all the toilet paper and bottled water every time there's some scare on the news.

So how reliable is it to retire a fortress, do some things in adventure mode, then come back to the fortress mode?  Any glaring bugs?

Have you tried food in containers to keep it from rotting that is what I have done in 34.11 when embarking on a lair I had loaded with stuff.

Is cooking and brew allowed or disallowed?

You can brew a plump helmet to five units of wine. Then you can cook the wine. (plus seeds can be cooked)
