What exactly is the thought rewrite?
« on: September 24, 2014, 11:18:36 pm »

So, maybe I'm missing something obvious, but what is the thought rewrite that's giving Toady such a pain in the butt? Why is he rewriting it? I assume it wasn't critical, if we've gone through 13 0.40.x versions without it, but what's the advantage? New capabilities?

And by thoughts, are we talking dwarves deciding their priorities, or are we referring to happy/unhappy thoughts? (Come to think of it, the latter makes more sense, since he mentioned writing things...)

As far as I'm aware, the thought rewrite is more along the lines of "I have witnessed death.  It was inevitable."  I could very well be wrong though.

"I have witnessed death.  It was inevitable."
It really is, though. Especially in this game.

In short: replacing the current one-dimensional happiness system with a more nuanced, deep and circumstance-based system.

You can see why he's been so brief recently.

There are two ways out of this state: either he gets a huge boost to happiness and creates an artefact OR...

I was under the impression that it was revamping these sorts of thoughts, given that those have been in the game since the very beginning, and what you describe is pretty much brand new to version 0.40 (and would thus be a bit early for a rewrite).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

That's -kinda- what I meant as well.  It's the existing thoughts, but given life context that can change the total effect.

Really, this is a spoiler. Not a DF spoiler, but a spoiler nonetheless.
