Minecraft With Mom! (Formerly Minecraft Commune)
« on: September 23, 2014, 12:32:26 pm »

Greetings, dorfy friends! Some of you know I've been making series of Minecraft videos for a while now, and I've added the cloning mod to my game so that I can add player NPCs to the world. I make a clone, enter a real user's name, and their name and skin take over the clone. It's not massively in-depth, but I can make you mine or farm or fight for me.

I've done the first videos, introducing the first clone (my mom), and I'm ready to start adding Bay12ers. I already have a long list of names of people who volunteered to be NPCs, but I'd like to prioritize people who are really interested in the series and will contribute with suggestions and feedback. So, before I film the next episode, I'd like to choose 3 NPCs to start working in our mine.

If you're interested, please watch the videos first. There are only 3 so far, averaging about 20 minutes each. Once you're familiar with the location, go ahead and give me your Minecraft user name and let me know what you'd like to do (although at first, you'll definitely be a mining slave). I'll take suggestions from the NPCs (and possibly from observers as well) on what we should do next, similarly to a traditional DF community fort. And naturally you're welcome to keep a journal, submit fan art, or whatever else you like.

The videos can be found on this handy playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVn_gKZIx41VCjKGqXKKDbKYoTQS18lNZ

I'd also love to do some LAN-play multiplayer sometime on this world (using Hamachi) and film some actual group play. Also amazing would be if any of the volunteers would be willing to do a little "voice acting" -- record yourself answering a list of questions, which I will then take out of context and insert into the game in humorous ways.

I shall post to watch for now, though I have no microphone and have not yet reviewed the videos in question.

I as well shall post to watch. I'm not entirely sure what the premise is but it sounds interesting. I can do voice work if need be.

Posting to watch as well, also to mention that the name I provided will probably result in varying skins as I try to settle on one. Probably mostly variations on the robot cyclops I've got now, but it may vary significantly.

Holy crap that Myst mod is cool.

EDIT: You should totally make a little getaway in the ender cave. Like, a house made of some dark material hanging from the ceiling over the lake.

I as well shall post to watch. I'm not entirely sure what the premise is but it sounds interesting. I can do voice work if need be.

The premise is essentially to have a community game using only cloned NPCs and the tools included in the mods I've installed, with feedback from the people whose clones I'm using. I haven't decided on a specific direction for the story to take yet, but there are many possibilities. Does anyone have any suggestions yet? If not, I'll stick a few clones in a mine shaft and see what they dig. If no one volunteers, I'll just pick names at random and choose the ones with the most fitting skins. (Also, if you've given me your name already but want it included, please give it to me again, since my list is a little messy.)

I love the idea of having a getaway in the End Cave. That will definitely go on my to-do list. Also on the list is to find a world with lakes or oceans of some attractive molten metal or gem and cast blocks from it to build a castle out of.

We also need someone to work in the tavern/inn, maybe some travelers to stay in the rooms there, suggestions for new buildings in the town... I am happy to build more houses as well. We'll see how much we can create before my computer explodes -- and hopefully by then I'll have my new computer and can keep going!

Also, as of right now the world is still set on peaceful, but I am willing to turn monsters on (with mobGriefing off to protect my beautiful buildings). Maybe I should put a wall around the town first.

I can't take clones through the books, but I can create clone copies on the other side and pretend they came through with me. We can build a base in a suitable world or explore a hostile one.

Mostly, I'm counting on suggestions and input from you guys to drive the story forward. Use your imagination. Unlike DF, your clones won't just take jobs that need to get done on their own, so I need to give everyone very specific instructions.

Color me interested in joining up, among other things. Including the following comments.

The reasons the notebooks are so expensive from villagers is because they tend to have pages already inside of them. As in, the notebooks aren't empty. IMO, they're quite worth it, though a bit of a gamble. Especially if you have a lake of molten emerald, it'll cut out a hefty chunk of the required exploration for libraries.

I think you can name villagers like livestock and other mobs. That is, with a nametag on an anvil and right-click them.

A useless cave where the lava appears to be instead molten metal of some sort isn't useless at all, silly.  In fact, it appeared to be either aluminum brass or gold. You appeared to realize this in the next episode though.

Right-clicking with a Tinker's Construct tool, usually picks and hammers, will attempt to place the item in the slot to the...right of it I think? Or left. Either way, this is useful as it lets you plunk down torches without having to select them on your bar.

I'm not sure if you're purposefully acting obtuse in the videos, but those books in your inventory detail pretty much everything about Tinker's Construct. Including what Lapis does (Fortune/Looting) and what the other modifiers are, so you don't have to experiment.

Can we also get the name of the modpack you're using/a list of the mods?

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

The story I'm imagining right now is some wizard fleeing their old world to rebuild their homeland in a new one.

Thanks for the comments, guys! I have to run to work now, just a very quick response to a few things:
1. You can't rename villagers with nametags, unfortunately. Right-clicking even with a nametag just opens the trade window. It appears to be impossible to name them after they've spawned. I should have named the eggs.
2. I wasn't acting purposefully obtuse, I was just filming myself playing with tinker's construct for the first time and hadn't had time to read through the books yet. I'm getting better at it now. All information and tips are welcome.
3. I will definitely post a list of my mods. I've made a custom modpack. Will do this later today.

My skin'd be suitable for a whole 'crashlanded alien robot' storyline, as contrived as that sounds. But again, the whole 'subject to change' caveat comes up.

And have you tried holding down shift while right-clicking on a villager with a nametag? I know shit-right-clicking works for placing blocks on blocks you normally interact with upon right-clicking, so it might work for villagers.

Nice to know you're not being purposefully obtuse, that's what our help is for! One of my biggest streamer/youtuber turnoffs are people who purposefully act like an idiot. Other than that, you're doing rather spectacularly, but you do probably want to start turning that lake of liquid emeralds into solid emeralds, especially of one of your villagers is offering paged notebooks.

Also, you should already have my name on your list, and my skin is one that should fit right in, I'm fine with being a miner, and if you switch off Peaceful, the skin is also good as a Slayer of Monsters.

Yes! But I can't remember what world it was in. I have to search through my books until I find it again. I wish I had realized its significance when I found it! And no worries, I never play dumb. I may be an idiot sometimes, but never intentionally. : )

This is all sounding great, guys. So many ideas. Now I just have to find the time to play and record and edit the next video... Keep the suggestions (and volunteers) coming!

Here's my mod list:
ChickenShed
Wild Caves
Better Storage
Antique Atlas
Backpacks
Better Grass and Leaves
Better Signs
BiblioCraft (+Biomes O'Plenty extension)
Biomes O'Plenty
Buildcraft
CloneCraft
(CodeChickenCore)
Dynamic Lights
Growthcraft: apples, bamboo, cellar, core, fishtrap, grapes, hops, rice
Hunger Overhaul (depletes hunger bar steadily even on peaceful)
KeihtyUtils (I'm not sure if I need this anymore, actually, since I removed AquaCulture - can anyone confirm?)
Mystcraft
NEI + addons
OptiFine
HarvestCraft
Wee Flowers
Plant Mega Pack
Project Red (all except mechanical, which crashes the game)
Tinkers Construct
ThaumCraft
Village Taverns
yalsm (yet another leather smelting mod)

That's it, I think. I'd like to add IndustrialCraft as well, but when I tried to install it, it crashed. I think it needs a different version of Forge than one of the other mods, and I couldn't get both working. If anyone is able to find a way, I'd love to add it, as well as Thermal Expansion. I rarely actually use the tech mods, but it's nice to have the option.

I've been disappointed with ThaumCraft, I have to say. I expected alchemy and spells and whatnot, but it seems to be entirely about wandering around looking at stuff, followed by grindy, repetitive "research" tasks. Even using the wiki, it took me ages to get all of the symbols researched -- and then I had to restart the game and lost it all. Is there a way to cheat in all the symbols so I can get to the more interesting parts of the mod? If anyone has a way to make this mod useful and fun rather than tedious and boring, do let me know!

I can honestly say that whenever I try to make a modpack, this one is missing. I have no idea what it does or what mods it's for, except that it's always required.
I just include it by default now.

As for Thaumcraft, there's a config option to set research to Easy mode. You still need to do the whole "look at stuff" thing, but it skips the annoying minigame. I'm afraid I don't know any other cheaty ways of getting around it. I guess you could just spawn in a bunch of aura nodes if you're really desperate.
