Yea, what about people with severely depreciated local currency?  2 billion is like, 100k to some of them :P

2 billion is like 2.2 billion to me.

Edit: No, wait, 1.8 billion.
Edit2: Hang on, 2 billion US is ~1.8 billion NZ, and 2 billion NZ is ~ 2.2 billion US. So both at the same time. And I still wouldn't want Toady to sell DF.

If Notch had sold it for two point five million, it'd probably be because he was severely depressed and on a ton of drugs when he made the deal. He made many times that, easily. Now, two point five billion, though, is slightly more reasonable for what that game is. Still, he really should've had more of a backbone and asked for a real price. Toady One is doing what makes him happy, getting paid for it, and praised for it. Honestly, I'm majorly jealous. I bet he'd hold his ground better than Notch and the Mojang team.

I don't know what's going on with those numbers. Our dollar is worth only slightly less than the USD, in any case.

Disclaimer: I'm not a huge Minecraft fan, it's a good game, but it's not in my top 10 favorite games.

I really don't think that Microsoft is going to ruin Minecraft.  Minecraft is fundamentally a "finished" game, with updates here and there and a healthy modding community.  They'd have to re-make the game to change it in any significant way; and Minecraft is already a commercially leveraged brand.  It'd be like if Microsoft bought Bethesda studios.  Whether you like Skyrim or not, the game and major expansions are finished and wouldn't be changing if the owners changed hands.

If Microsoft somehow gained the rights to Dwarf Fortress...I think that they would take two years to sort through all of the code that Toady had written.  Then, they would create a new game, using the Dwarf Fortress brand, according to their business plan.

It hit version 1.0, but It's still advancing faster than most games, production wise.

There's still a lot of steam left in Minecraft. I doubt it's going to burn out any time soon. Microsoft (hopefully) isn't dumb enough to assign entirely new devs to it, either; it makes more sense to keep Jeb and friends working on it.

DF, though, is a slightly different story. Any buyer would have to keep Toady on as a developer, or at least in close contact with the new team, because (according to Toady) the code is so poorly documented even he has trouble figuring out what it does. After that, though, there's not really any reason to keep him.

The original "What if EA got the rights to Dwarf Fortress" thread still sums up what I think any triple-A developer would do. They'd buy the game for the IP, make a dime-a-dozen FPS game about it, and when it flops they'd declare there's no demand for Dwarf Fortress games anymore.

Hehe.. I onced started a flamewar by answering NO.. to "Would you do the same?"

I cannot, for my entire life, just do something in order to get money from it.. It sounds silly, but I cannot make a career purely for the financial benefits.
I am working as a developer, but I have encountered multiple situations, where I could have possibly made a profit.
The only, and only, reason why I am working my entire adult life.. is because I do need to eat.
Believe me, it's incredibly hard to live such a life. Most people look down on you.

It shows character, when offered a large amount of money and saying no.. in order to stick by your product.
However, the norm nowadays is to sell out instantly, when given the chance.

I cannot blame Toady himself, when he would decide to take such an offer.
Compared with games as Minecraft and Rust.. Toady has been a lot more generous than all those 'developers'
Notch' decision to sell out.. is simply cheap.. Yes, he is allowed to..
But when you have already made so much profit from it, I like to think you still have responsibility towards your clients.
I mean.. I don't like Minecraft, but I do understand its popularity.. When you look at how Notch is living nowadays, compared with 'Minecraft'.. It's a sad sad materialistic world.
Seeing as Notch isn't that much of a developer himself.. He simply had a lucky hit, but didn't really re-invest this back to his clients.

Garry, of Rust, already said that he would do the same.
Rust is terrible, it shows with great certainty that the developers there just aren't that good. (it shows a learning curve)
I never ever touched Rust anymore.

Every time someone gets sold out, my heart breaks a little.
Our telephone providers are all USA and Mexico, our postal services are all USA.. I live in the frickin' Netherlands. (The Dutch are #1 at selling out)

Hats off to you fellow Dutchy, and don't forget our national railway company dodging taxes in Ireland.

Har yea... I think the Train infrastructure company is still Dutch owned (ProRail).. probably not though.
Our 'royal' airline is French.
A lot of companies 'use' Ireland for tax reduction, which in itself should be a crime.

As conclusion.. I would say.. Toadie given more than enough.. he is 'allowed' to sell out, if he would even consider to do such.
When you actually make a good living of something (read: having more than 2 cars ; multiple houses etcetera), you would need to take your responsibilities.

So Notch and Garry.. You both are terrible persons.. not for selling out, but for your ignorance. ( I still think both of them can't actually code themself and need someone else's work to do something)
