IIRC the whole bread and wine communion thing is basicaly symbolism that Jesus can sustain you (spiritually) a more modern version would be with a cheese burger and a soda (or at least for 'muricans) once again IIRC
Nah, transubstantiation states that it's not a symbol, but that the bread and wine actually changes in to the legit body and blood of Christ. It's part of some group of miracles or something? I was pretty deep Catholic but not deep enough to remember that completly I guess. It's kinda weird.

I was talking about communion
Same saramony just different meaning I guess
Well no, the wafer during communion, to Catholics, is the honest to goodness body of christ. Same with the wine/blood. We all get to eat Jesus once a week.

Also, my priest called people who pick and choose (don't come every sunday, choose certain beleives etc.) Halfolics. It was kinda funny.

OW: It really is pick and choose though. At leats for Catholics. If you're Catholic, you're saying "everything in the Catachism, and what the Vatican says, is my religion". If you choose to disregard something, or don't believe something, you're picking and choosing from the believes. The clergy really frowned on that. (You can't pay if you aren't there every week!)

Hey guys, thanks for keeping this thread as mellow as it has been. You've all for the most like 99% have been mature about this. Thank you

Well, yeah? I described that kind of person as "wishy-washy". I may have slightly underplayed how common they are, though.
Still, they're kinda... looked down on.

There's a fairly... generous interpretation of Jesus fig-tree-withering miracle that talks about that kind of thing. Fig trees grow leaves and fruit at roughly the same time, so healthy leaves are usually a good indicator that there's fruit on the tree. Jesus saw the leafy tree, discovered it had no fruit, and told it to shrivel up and die. Basically, people professing to be Christian (leaves) but not doing what's required by that (fruit) are not going to have a fun time.
I don't really know how reliable it is, but it seems to make sense, I guess.

Yes, it makes sense. And yet, it's another add on to the Bible. If that's what Jesus had meant, Jesus would have said it.

Not necessarily. When asked why he spoke in parables, he said something to the effect of "so people don't understand what I'm talking about".

Unless the fig tree was supposed to be symbolic of ancient Israel, which is another interpretation I've heard.

Yeah. I'm not saying you should take it as canon, just that it's a thing that I heard that kinda fits the topic.

Which leads to interpretation, which leads to potential eternal damnation.

If someone wants to pick-and-choose and only follow the good parts of the Bible, I will support them entirely in that.

I prefer "God wouldn't tell us to kill people who had gay sex. The ancient guy who wrote this down snuck in his homophobia." over all the ridiculous rationalization people do to justify the passage while not justifying homophobia.

That's actually a good question to annoy a Catholic theologian with. I guess communion wine is totally literally blood, except it's not.

I think we do have a Catholic around somewhere. Avatar is a panther, or something? Maybe he can answer the question. *Casts Summon Catholic*

* Arcvasti anwsers the call.

Although I'm hardly the most devout. Especially since, more and more, I see that the Church extrapolates a hell of a lot from Biblical canon. Still Christian, but debatably Catholic. And still has some doctrine left from the times where they[more] shamelessly extorted people. Transubstantiation never struck me as a silly doctrine. It was bread and wine. Now its bread and wine made of God. Which probably accounts for the taste. I like eating unleavened bread. And salty soda crackers.

Well, the important bits with regard to avoiding hell are pretty simple. It's also fairly hard to read into the NT without encountering something to the effect of "treat everyone you meet with respect and kindness".

Phmcw: It's in Acts, 15. The verse about blood is 15:29.

Note that it also says "do no commit sexual bad stuff", which is a bit vague, but probably is meant to include adultery and homosexuality.
