1. Yup, there's cave fish, cave lobster, and turtle.
2. There can only be tower caps grown when you breach an underground water source, so... yup.
3. It is normal water already.
4. You can fish in almost any water source, you'll just get turtles. But if you truly really want cave fish, then it only works with water closely connected to the underwater source.
5. Yeah, so long as it's underground and near the underground water, if the land is muddy, you should get tower-caps.

I think he might be asking, whether cave river water allows these things, and thus is special, or if the discovery of a cave river enables any water to carry these features...

Well, concerning tower caps and underground shrubberies, they'll grow on any soil that's underground, anywhere on the map, so long as the cave river or cave pond is breached.  I have a fortress that started with an exposed underground pond, and I began to get shrubberies and young tower caps before I even finished constructing my farm!

All of those are a feature of any underground water, except for Tower-caps (and cave-fish, I believe, though turtles will appear in any underground water).

There's a lot of rumors, opinions, and assumptions going around regarding the relationship between underground lakes/rivers and Tower-caps, but the only sure thing (barring an immediate revelation by the Allmighty Toad) is that you must have discovered an underground river/lake to grow Tower-caps on muddy floors underground.

Until Toady makes a statement on this (I doubt it'd be the first, and I doubt it'd be the last; hell, there's probably a chance that he said something last night and every regular knows the specifics of growing Tower-caps except me), to quell at least SOME of the assumptions, I have successfuly grown Tower-caps in water taken from an above-ground brook (after moving it below-ground, of course) in a recent version, so the water in question does not actually have to be from the underground river/lake.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Damn, this means I really have to uncover the underground river. I just carved out fortifications in it's walls to let the water in, which didn't uncover it, unfortunately...oh well, I will probably dig into it from above, so nasties can't get at my miner.
