It's not a big information point, but it's the only one so far, and it did go against expectation.

I think it's a bit interesting because many predicted the yes vote to win there. The fact that it swung the other way might be indicative of a swing towards no nationwide

Well, it's a small percent of the population that was supposed to go decisively Yes, not decisively No as it did.  It's not necessarily indicative of a majority of voters in Scotland, but it does jive with what I've heard about the probable shift in votes relative to the preliminary surveys; to wit, that given the general conduct of a certain particular subset of Yes campaigners, those who would vote No would be less likely to state as such openly, thus skewing polls in favour of Yes.

I wouldn't call that decisive.

Also, turnout appears to be marginally lower in the cities (70-75%) compared to the smaller towns and countryside, where it's in the 80's and 90's.

I suppose so.  My take is probably a bit skewed considering this was supposed to be one of the firmest Yes votes, so for it to go 46%/54% to No is a bit of a surprise.  It's at least twice what I would consider a fine margin.

My, my.  Orkney's no surprise, given the general trend outside of the Central Belt, but West Lothian's definitely in the same vein as Clackmannanshire.  If someplace like Dundee goes No as well, now, that'll be...well, that'll be something to see.

Sad thing is, even at their lowest (58.1% in 2001), Scottish electoral turnout beats American turnout (57.5% in 2012 -- the highest since 1968).

The highest American turnout (since anybody started keeping track in the 1820's) was the 1876 Presidential election between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel Tilden, which had 81.8% turnout.


I salute you, you vote-happy Scots.

That's because it isn't official. The 45-55 results is one of the parties's estimation, not a proper result.

I'd be curious to know why Orkney was a given for the "No" vote. I'd have thought the opposite, given the remoteness from England and the deep Nordic roots.
