A wagon of fags? Never leave home without them.

I think the fact that he always had a literal wagon made of cigarettes closeby might have contributed somewhat.

I remember the first time I tried doing anything with water. I ended up flooding the entire bottom half of my fort. Attempts to block off the water didn't work because it moved so fast and the dwarves took so long to do anything, it ended up being a futile effort. In the end, I ended up locking dwarves in their bedrooms and digging down into the rooms to bring them back out.  I also, in the hopes of relieving water pressure, cut a hole in the side of my fort. Unfortunately for me, though, rivers would never run out of water. So I ended up just flooding my map.

Bet that looked strange to the Humans and Elves that lived nearby, though.

When he disassembled the wagon, he could have made artifact cigarette beds if he was lucky.

One good fire would have . . . wait. Would a fire burn the bed to ashes, or create a never ending, growing cloud of nicotine smoke?

And thus my first falls...

What happened? weird things. Along the line I got a Liaison... who was a Goblin.

And then a stampede of were-squirrels sacked my whole fort while I couldn't figure out how to make a dwarf pick up an axe. :|

Lets try again :D

By the by a "wagon" when used to describe a amount of fags, is slang for a carton.

A dwarf will try to get an axe, if his labor 'wood cutting' is active (and used?, or will they immediately get their axe), or when he wants it as military uniform.
It is possible to tell the military to use 'any weapon', which makes it possible for them to use up all the axes.
(I typically bring a few extra, cheap, picks and axes during embark)

Finding your end by Were-squirrels is amusing :p

Oh noes, the Dwarfmanity! "chip" "chip" "chip".. our nuts!

I decided to ignore your description and see the wagon of fags, as a wagon made of fags.

In addition, note, that woodcutter with axe will store it in stockpile and take an other weapon (even new axe if he is axedwarf at the same time), if he's drafted in your army. It's generally good idea not to draft miners and woodcutters in regular army, since other dwarves do not use tools in their work and, therefore, can carry their weapons all the time, being ready for alert. Same happens with hunters, although they have increased marksdwarf skill and may serve as good addition to your forces

I only had "a" axe since I only know how to make stockpiles, a chicken coop and set up some fields and pray for the best, my fort was sitting on a stockpile of raw gold steel and rubies because I have no idea how to smelt or forge.

In my opinion the smelting works are one of the harder things to do in Dwarf Fortress.
(A decent leather / clothing industry is tricky as well).

Maybe this image can help you out a bit : http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/File:DFflowchart.png

To make metal bars (forget about alloys), you can do 3 things:

1.
Use a lot of wood.
Ie. You need to be in an area with atleast some trees (nowadays they drop a lot more wood, but grow slower?)

Use a wood furnace to make charcoal, use charcoal in your smelters to combine with an ore stone. (I think the menu of the smelter will show all available options, but you -need- charcoal)
Once you made regular bars (iron/silver/what be it) you can make alloys, but I'd skip that part until your stockpile has enough metal bars.
Alloys : http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Metal#Alloys_2

Alloys can be useful, when certain stronger materials don't exist, or when you need more bars than the original ore gave you.

2. Combination of #1 and 'coal'.
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Fuel

If your embark includes coal, you can use this to get more fuel to smelt your metals with.
First you need at least 1 regular fuel type, charcoal, which is burnt wood.
After which you can use that 1 fuel item to make many more, using coal.

3. Use magma

Depending on the embark, I found this to be the more difficult (But most rewarding).
Either get all the magma from the bottom of the map, using a pump stack.
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/v0.34:Screw_pump#Pump_stack

However, you need a lot of magma-safe materials and patience to get it up and running.

Easiest is.. find a volcano, embark on it and drain the sucker.
Open up 1 tile under your smelters, possible use a grate to keep nasties (magma man/imp) out and place your 'magma' workshops there. (and fill the level below the workshops up with magma).

You still need regular fuel, if you want to use steel. (in order for the flux part, if not mistaken)

Question, when I hit Adamentin, is it a good idea to build the main gate out of it?

Oh also, how do I exactly make dwarves all rush in to the keep so I can shut the door? Do I need a Meeting Hall for that? Since all the fishermen and farmers got slaughtered by the weresquirrels imminently because fishers were fishing and farmers were picking berries ( for whatever reason... I had 4 farms queued up to build and only 1 of 5 (farmers) of them built 2 farms and then tilled them...)

1. Generally it's possible, but not optimal decision: supply of adamantine is low and it is a valuable weapon material, so you should use it wise. Plus, adamantine door will work just as any other door in case of fortress defence. Same goes for adamantine bridge.

2. designate new burro[w], then go to [m]ilitary screen, hit [a]lerts, [c]-add alert. Then interface goes kinda illogical way: in military-alerts, move left selector to your new alert, then move selector to right pane, so your new burrow will highlight. Now hit enter, and them move back to left pane and hit enter again, thus selecting new alert as active for civil dwarves. And now they all will move to defined area

... I only know how to make stockpiles, a chicken coop and set up some fields and pray for the best...

Am I reading this correctly in that you don't know how to set up workshops to make crafts and furniture? In case that's true, you hit < b> to open up your buildings menu, then either < w > for workshops (Loom, carpenter, forge, kitchen, etc.) or < e > for furnaces. (Wood burner, smelter, glass and clay ovens) Most workshops need a single unit of any building material to build, furnaces and the forge require that the material be fire-proof. (Stone or metal, basically.)

Also in the build menu, you can place furniture that you've crafted in workshops so that dwarves can use them, the < D > Trade Depot for getting rid of surplus crapfts in exchange for any goods you don't have on-site, < C > constructions, to build above-ground walls and floors for defense or accessibility, and < T > defensive traps such as menacing spikes, sawblades, and even levers for remotely turning machines on/off. (Raising bridges won't work unless you can manually turn them on.)

Thanks for the tips! also yes I know how to workshops, but not how to refine metal :P

Also I still have a problem with 80% of my farmers just not doing anything farming related, with only one guy actually planting and harvesting.

beautiful to see new people who are actually trying and don't just give up

farms, I always make two and set them to plump helmets at first, once you can get new seeds, make new farms.  you need to have a LOT of phelmet seeds, so buy some from the dwarven caravan, and bring on embark.

To give a gentle advice.. If you want to use dedicated farmers (they yield more results / work faster, if not mistaken).. Use the orders screen to only let farmers harvest the crops. (otherwise all dwarves, including non-farming ones, will harvest).

I found out a problem with 1 of my forts.. and it seems that 1 guy carried -all- relevant seeds "(inside a bag), so only that 1 guy can actually plant and all the other farmers gotten job cancellations.
This resolved itself after a while, when I had so many seeds that they couldn't be stored all together.
