New embark, new challanges, new clueless dwarf shenanigans. On a scale of 1 to Fuckyou, how stupid it is to carve a fort in Red Sand?

Also WOOP Native Gold on the first level :D

We tend not to incorperate cussing into our rating system.
:)

Its not bad to dig in sand, but theres over 100 layers of stone to play in.  Consider your supply of stone, your spatial plans, and the fungal bloom that accompanies the cavern pop.  When the cavern gets dug into for the first time they produce spores that spread to all dark indoor mud, sand, and soil.  Basically you start getting cave plants in the soil.  Its not as  bad as it used to  be . . .

Native gold is good times, but beware its non-military applications.  Its a lot of value for limited defense.

Also keep in mind you can't smooth and engrave sand rooms to raise their value, and when the cavern spores get spread you can get plants that grow in sand and block hallways.

It's great to start out in sand (easy to dig fast / easy farm land), but it's as undwarven as pointy ears.
Just imagine all that itchy red sand getting caught in their beards.

Typically stone walls are your friend, as you can smoothen/engrace it, but it's not required at all.
Dehydrated.. No booze or nearby water?

Year two aricved, the caravan is nice and set there, Liason came by so what happened?

For starters all the Wormy unsymmetrical tunnels you see on the map was one gigantic Native gold deposit. As can bee seen in the southern Ore and Bar stockpile.

The 1 level is above the main fort, and thats where I grow Hardcaps and Pig tails, I have not set up a Clothier yet.

-1st is the old expanded dormitory which I will be converting in to a Graveyard

-5th is a Housing district currently udner construction.

Problems:
Caravans won't trade - a Elf caravan came around spring and I sent all my fabulous Golden Dwarf crafts along with Stone ones... they just sat there and didn't buy shit nor sell shit.
I'm afraid it seams the same thing is happening with the Moutainshome caravan now as well.

Lack of booze variety - Apparently no matter what I do I only have one variety of alcohol.

Migrants - The list of migrants I have now is AFTER a werecayote killed off 10.

Where da Flux Stone? - I keep digging and no Flux-stone... I'm fine with these copper bolts, but Steel sounds delicious

Golden/Silver padding - Somebody mentioned casually Gold and Silver can be used to reinforce and improve weapons armour and furniture, how?

Caravans : Check if there are trees in the way.. use "D", if I remember to check access to your depot. (also "q" on your depot to actually send someone and stuff to it)
Booze : Not that a big a deal.. I'd say, make something pretty to keep your dwarves happy in your dining room or whereever they go.
Flux : Almost always not around for me, so I dunno.. if you checked for it during embark, it might be at caverns level (marble and such?)
Gold/Silver : No idea.. I wouldnt do too much with it yet.. it increases your wealth a lot.
Migrants : Meh.. If they know noone in your fort, they might just complain about your precious booze :p

For trading you need a broker. Make a random dwarf your broker in the (n)obles screen. If you have trouble with trading check the wiki.

Elves usually have interesting booze to sell and start growing bigger variety of plants to brew.

It's rare to find a site with no flux. It is probably deeper.

You can stud things with gold but it will only increase item value and nothing else.

yea once you move all the stuff to the trade depot, or even during, you need to press Q then R over the depot and call for the broker. You can set it to let anyone trade, the important part is that your broker has appraisal skills, which he or she can raise by trading once or twice.

Once the broker or whoever gets to the depot (you may have to turn off her other labors, they really seem to avoid going there if there is anything else to do. I just have a broker who does nothing else,) hit q and then t. Sometimes the merchants will be unloading their goods and you'll have to wait a minute or so, though.

A quick shortcut, (and something some people consider exploity) is that wooden trap components sell for a very large amount. Especially if you keep one dwarf doing it and get their skill up, the better crafted the item (I usually make spiked wooden balls) the higher it goes for.

Just to clarify..
You don't need a broker noble, but it is recommended to raise the 'appraisal' skill.

Querying 'q' the Depot will enable you to either send -anyone-, or only the broker.
Every dwarf assists in hauling the trade objects, regardless.

I tend to use 1 dwarf (with appraisal skill, when available) as both broker/bookkeeper and only let him/her trade.
I disable almost every job for him, so he only updates the fort records or trading.

QUESTION IS... how do I smelt it before Atumn? :| and what should I buy with it? ( assuming the caravan will have it.)

Smelting requires that you have at an ore, a bar of fuel, and a dwarf with the "furnace operator" labor. "Fuel" can mean either charcoal (produced by burning logs at the wood burner with the "wood burner" labor) or coke, (from smelting bit. coal or lignite at the smelter), and technically doesn't need to factor into most metal-working at all once you discover magma.
