Okay this time... I woun't elf-out
« on: September 16, 2014, 04:52:34 pm »

I have read about Dwarf Fortress for countless years. Ever since Boatmurder went viral, I was awe stricken - and I imminently on that day proceeded to download the game but... whats this? PASCAL OR SOMETHING?! And poof the spell waned, only to come back a year or so later.

Well this time no more - I'm going to learn this, I'm going to achieve it, I WILL FINALLY FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE THESE FUCKING MIDGETS DIG!

I have everything I need:
1.Quit Job? Check.
2.Two six packs of Energy Drinks? Check.
3.Three bottles of clear vodka for the inevitable fun in the end? Checkaroonie.
4. A wagon of fags? Never leave home without them.
5. Physical and PDF copy of " Getting Started with Dwarf Fortress" by Peter Tyson? Checkers.
6. Moved back in to parent's basement? Checkcity

Also for a lil bit of extra fun, I thought I might ask the community about a opinion

How long will my first fortress last, and how will it get !!FUN!!-ed in to a mushroom cloud?

How long it lives and how it dies is entirely up to your mismanagement. :)

It took about my tenth fort before I felt I had a good handle on what I needed to do in order to survive for more than the first ten minutes.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

I'm betting you'll botch the emergency well and drown everyone, that's how my first serious fort ended. ^v^

Welcome and I hope you enjoy this amazing game. I suggest getting the latest version of the Starter Pack if you have not already. It has many quality of life improvements through bugfixes, optimizations, UI mods and graphics packs. I recommend phoebus.

PS - Donate to Toady if you can.

PPS - I would hold off on adventure mode for a while.

Welcome and enjoy. I'd recommend tripling the energy drinks, and go with grain alcohol (minimum 160 proof).

Welcome aboard.  Anyone who has a wagon of fags is welcome here.
Well no.  I quit a while back.  But being an American it sounds fun to say.

I experimented with the game a lot until I got it, and there are definitely still things I don't get.  I found the hardest industries to learn were the last two I played with, farming and metalworking.

Its just understanding what can go where, and what will keep you alive.  The wiki is great for average questions, but most people here will be happy to comment on any situation you find yourself in.

Given the latest stories I hear about the new version, I recommend you put up a door and/or bridge asap and use that than fight until you get the hang of it.  Bring extra food until you get farming or egg layers down.  And also take some pigs and dogs.

---

Also make wheelbarrows.  Awesome, and irreplaceable for stone moving early on.  Though minecarts are faster once you set them up.

You are too prepared! You won't have any !!FUN!! like that.
Prediction: Your fort prospers to over 120 dwarves, all of whom are constantly ecstatic and close friends with each other. Then an FB gets in through an unexpected gap and kills fifteen to twenty social dwarves and your fort falls to tantrum spiral.

No need to have bought that book.  Watch Captnduck on Youtube, his tutorials are #1.

Treat it like a book: you don't look at a page, see words and say, 'Ah hell, no, fuck that!'. Stick with it - the game thrives on it's ability to generate emergent narratives.

Also - that book is probably already out of date. A nice idea, but you'd be better off watching youtube tutorials.

If my experiences with the 2014 version of DF is anything to go by, you'll probably be visited by a were-beast in the first couple of years and your fortress will butcher itself from the inside. They aren't pushovers anymore and it's taking me a while to adjust...

I predict embarking on a site with no metal, and therefore no industry, and little weapons and armour

Lets use the ancient naval art of training war parrots. No one will realize they have been boarded by space war parrots until it is to late!
You can fake being able to run on water. You can't fake looking cool when you break your foot on a door and hit your head on the floor.

None of that matters if you dont know how to smelt it or organize it.  Goblinite is the equalizer, and bridges only need wood.  Hell, with a good head, a catapult will ensure some easy kills.  A good open trench leading to you gateway.
