Man, it's good to be back. Anyway...
Hello there. I am Heydude6, you probably know me as one of the members of the hivewasp dev team. I've coded the reproduction system and made part of the creature file for the hivemind wasps. Currently I'm drawing the sprites for the mod. I've actually been doing this for a while now although embarrassingly it is to say, I have been working slowly unfortunately. My sprites for the citizens are actually almost done although I have often been a bit lazy and I need to give myself a final push in order to get this done. So my idea for giving myself this push is through hosting a daily devlog on this thread. Here I will post one newly made sprite a day and possibly some other stuff, this first post is going to be a wall of text so brace yourselves. Feel free to comment
Heydudes Sprite devlog: Day 1Anyway for the first episode I want to upload all of the sprites I drew so you can see my progress (also as a backup since I have a feeling my hardrive is going to go caput anyday now).
So let us first start with the citizen sprites:
The stuff I didn't label are just artifacts from my previous attempts, I keep them since I sometimes get inspiration from them. (such as replacing the macewasps original crappy mace sprites with a cut version of the chef's spoon)
- This is just a regular peasant sprite
- This is a child sprite, in case a bug ever happens where a waspen child is born, this will be there so that it at least has a sprite rather than being an ASCII symbol, it should only be a child for 1 year
- This is a ghost, due to votes this was the sprite that was chosen
- This is a miner
- This is a woodworker
- This is a woodcutter
- This is a carpenter
- This is a bowyer
- This is a stoneworker
- This is a mason
- This is an engraver
- This is the architect. Pictured here is a wasp on a workbench writing in blueprints. I'm not really proud of this one since the I drew this after failing to draw a nice looking set of blueprints in it's hand, so I drew a workbench. Thankfully I currently have an idea about how to draw it well so this one is only temporary.
- This is a fisheryworker
- This is a fisherwasp
- This is a fishcleaner
- This is a fish dissector
- This is a ranger. The ranger is a worker that is skilled in at least 2 labors that are in ranger category of professions. The way Phoebus did his/her ranger sprite was by giving all dwarfs in that labour group a ranger uniform and then a tool that was relevant for their job. Since wasps don't have uniforms and only just their relevant tools I had to be creative with how to handle the ranger. Unfortunately I failed as far as creativity is concerned and all I did was slap a green bandana on it's head. The bandana didn't look good on the wasps that actually had tools so I didn't put it on them. See my fishery worker to see an example of a "blanket profession" sprite drawn right.
- This is the priest of the depths, also known as the animal dissector. This was a heavily modified version of Meph's warlock peasant sprite, you can see a before and after comparison of the 2 in the bottom right corner. This is one of my better sprites that was also chosen by vote. You can find the original animal dissector sprite among the artifacts.
- This is the animal trainer. I originally wanted it to have a megaphone and a whip but I couldn't fit it in the 16x16 resoloution and make it look good at the same time so I made it just the whip instead. You don't have to make it a 16x16 resolution but it's nice to adhere to a universal standard.
- This is the hunter, I probably can improve the bow a bit but probably later, it's good enough for now
- This is the animal trapper, it is just a peasant with a bear trap
- This is the fleshwarper otherwise known as the animal disector, it is a pallet swap of the priest of the depths and it will probably stay that way.
- This is the sprite for the "blanket profession" known as metalsmithing
- This is the sprite for the furnace operator
- This is the sprite for the weaponsmith
- This is the sprite for the armourer
- This is the sprite for the blacksmith
- This is the sprite for the metalcrafter
- This is the sprite for the jeweler
- This is the sprite for the gem cutter
- This is the sprite for the gem setter
- This is the sprite for the craftswasp. Originally I wanted this to be a wasp who was holding a hammer, paper cement and a bone, but after drawing the sprite I noticed that it didn't look nice so out of desperation I came up with the idea of the workbench. I don't know whether this will be in the final version or not but currently I don't have any ideas for substitutes
- This is the woodcrafter. I originally wanted this to be a wasp chewing on a piece of paper cement but when it was zoomed out it wasn't clear what he was chewing on so I drew something that was more clear. MOAR WORCKBENCHES!
- This is the stonecrafter. For the stonecrafter I wanted it to be a wasp who was holding a hammer and something else (I didn't put too much thought into it) but it looked too similar to the engraver so I went with the workbench approach.
- This is the leatherworker
- This is the bonecarver, my original plan was to have the wasp hold a bone the size of half of a log (log is in woodworker sprite) and have him hold a knife towards it but then I thought, why not more workbenches? Do you guys think I should keep the workbenches?
- This is the weaver, all wasps involved in the clothing industry have pink bandanas.
- This is the tailor, he is currently making a bandana
- This is a glassmaker
- This is a strand extractor
- This is a potter
- This is a glazer
- This is a chandler/wax worker
- This is
an dyer an artifact - This is the farmworker, see ranger
- This is a cheesemaker
- This is a milker
- This is a chef, there is currently an artifact sprite right next to the dyer that has the chef over a cauldron, I feel it's missing something. Which do you guys like better, spoon or cauldron?
- This is an archeologist, any suggested changes will be welcome
- This is a thresher, also chosen by vote
- This is a butcher, one of the sprites I spent the most effort on also chosen by vote. It was also the introduction of the apron.
- This is the tanner, it took a painful amount of effort to figure out how to differentiate it from leather-worker. Many face palms were had once captain obvious came in
- Whoops, this was the dyer, number 44 was an artifact, tell me which one you like better.
- This is the brewer
- This is the farmer, I am very proud of this one
- This is the woodburner
- This is the beekeeper, one of the first sprites I drew for this mod
- This is a engineer, the blanket proffession for mechanics and pump operating
- This is a mechanic
- This is a siege engineer, he is currently carrying a balista arrow
- These are seige operators, they are an homage to the dwarf one, I am currently torn with indecision about which one to choose
- This is an unfinished pump operator sprite, I just can't get the wasp to hold the pump properly, unless it looks fine to you
- This is the bookkeeper/manager/brocker hybrid that is currently in our nobility system. should I draw it with the pencil or without it?
- This is the outpost liason/broodmother envoy
- These are military sprites. more about this later
If the above doesn't look like much to you I thankfully have a picture of the dwarf sprites I haven't drawn yet:
As you can see it isn't much, although we have to account for the fact that i haven't drawn a sheerer, chemist, alchemist nor any medical wasps yet.
Also to whoever may know the answers, I have a few small questions. First what is that grey dwarf on the top left corner there for? also can anyone explain to me what the priests on the right are for? As well as an explanation for the dwarves on the bottom right. Thanks.
An explanation on military spritesOk, so the military wasps were also some of the first sprites I drew since I thought that those would have been the most difficult to draw. Anyway they are labelled as 1.recruit 2.wrestler 3.spearwasp, 4.swordwasp 5.axewasp 6.hammerwasp 7.crossbowwasp/slingwasp 8.macewasp 9.whip wasp 10.pikewasp 11.blowgunner/gunwasp (I have a blowgunner sprite as well) 12. bowwasp. The rookies are on the top and the legendary weaponlords are on the bottom, except one exception. The wasp in black armour is the militia commander and the one above him is a recruit(a soldier with no weaponskill). In the Phoebus dwarf sprites there is a spot for military nobles such as captain of the guard and militia commander:
, but then there are these dwarves in golden armour that are in the squads section:
Can someone please tell me what the dwarves in golden armor correspond to?
Wrapping things upNow that I talked about all the things that I wanted to talk about let me just upload the rest of the sprites I drew.
Hive thrall
Praetorain and abherrant living and undead(I am very proud of my undead sprites)
Larvae and eggs (white is male, yellow is female)
And my attempt at drawing the lobster god
In conclusionThank you guys for reading this, in case you found the information overwhelming I can assure you that tommorrows post won't be as long. Comment if you like although I do hope that I get the answers to some the questions I asked.
