He's listed as other, not under recruits. I'm going to try a knife user next, but I suspect he's just as effective as a weak speardwarf.

It's recruits/others.They aren't using what is considered a "real" weapon and as such are lumped in with untrained rabble and guys with weaponized kitchen knives. Just keep tabs on his thoughts and whatnot and all will be well though.

He's fine, as he was a accomplished sworddwarf beforehand. I chose a somewhat-trained militia member to join the elite squad. Currently, he's ecstatic. That may have to do with the high master cook meals and every hatch and door in my fort being artifacts.
