Maybe you just have an overly violent response. No one said anything about punching anyone.

inb4 someone says that Putnam's post about cringe has made them cringe

I know I'm cringing. And no, that doesn't mean I want to punch you in the face Putnam.

It didn't really. It's not proper cringe if your anus doesn't clench at least a little bit. This is more "oh, this again" eyeroll material.

Hasn't happened today but I've imagined myself biting into a fork several times in the last few weeks, not fun.

There's also slow cringe which doesn't clench your anus but hits you like a train slowly tilting over a cliff onto an

I dunno man, the first sentence of the first one made me clench so hard I think I became an outie.

ok yes if that's what the word "cringe" refers to then i can see what Putnam is on about

Well, maybe not a straight up punch, but a gentle wake-up slap and a "please stop that, you're being silly in a negative manner". Being silly in a neutral or positive manner is fine of course, but negative silliness is a dangerously slippery slope that can lead down the path of children pretending to be gangsta rappers, adolescents having rampant snowflake tendencies and adults that believe in homeopathy.

i personally thought that "cringe" refers to the feeling some people get when blackboards are scratched to make that sound

That uncomfortable sound is called pain

Witnessing someone else in pain, if they are for example hit in the balls with a tennis ball cannon - induces such a feeling as can be inferred as cringe
Cringe is also the witnessing of oblivious embarassment, as emotional pain being born witness to
Then there is high level alpha cringe which transcends all limitations and makes one ponder why God has abandoned mankind

I'd consider that to be more of a revelation of the exact reason instead. :v
So a bit more on the definition of the word "cringe", since i'm a filthy non-native english speaker; dictionary.com says, among other things, that it's "to wince in embarrassment or distaste", which seems about right to me. I wonder if actual psychopaths are more resistant to cringe than regular people, due to their impaired empathy?

Except this is the internet, so communities that deal in "cringe" tend to be a lot more hateful.
