Tileset / Needs rocks help.
« on: July 10, 2007, 12:52:00 am »

Hey all. I'm having a terrible time trying to get this up and running. The game runs fine on default setting but I made the mistake of seeing the tilesets in the wiki and fell in love. Now I'm desperately trying to get them to work. I've followed the installation wiki word by word, and yet Winterwing's Lucidia Console refuses to work. When I set it up and start the game I get a bunch of multicolord blocks kinda like || in the place of all symbols. I installed this tileset in the exact same manner as I did with Herrbdog's and it didn't run, while Herrbdog's does. Except for a glitch I will explain soon.

So after many attempts I switched over to the "easy" pack which contains  Dystopian Rhetoric which I like very much and  Herbbdog's font. The game actually worked until a certain point. I usually delve pretty deep into the mountain before I set up a base, about a screen and a half over. When I set up a mason and craftsdwarf shop and tell them to make something using rocks, which litter the area around them, it says I don't have any rocks!

Now what I'm wondering is if this is a bug, or am I just doing something wrong? I use "q", hover over the shop, and add a rock door to the queue for my mason, and plain stone craft for the craftsdwarf. They both have the skill, but a second later when I unpause it says there are no rocks. I deleted my Dwarf Fortress folder and started anew without any tilesets, made a mason shop as soon as possible, and I could make rock doors no problem.

I figured something was odd with the easy pack so I added the tileset and object tileset manually. Graphically, the game went fine but when I try to make a rock door, it happens again. No rocks it says. Can't make rock mugs or anything in my stonecrafter's either. I'm not building my shops right next to the outside like I did the time it worked, I'm playing seriously so I delve in a while before I build the shop. Is this somehow related?

I'm going crazy here. Are the tilesets somehow affecting the game? Am I just a noob who doesn't know how to use shops properly? Is there some special factor in Lucidia console font's installation that I'm missing?  I would GREATLY appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Thanks in advance.

Hmm. I deleted my old save game. Gonna miss it, but when I started again I rushed a mason's shop and a craftsdwarf's shop. They were able to make rock things with the tilesets! I'm not much happy with the setup, like I said, I rushed it so the part I usually reserve for future defenses is occupied with a craftdwarf's shop and a mason's.

What was going wrong when I dug deep? Why couldn't the Dwarves get rocks even when they were right outside their shop in the corridor? Could someone enlighten me on this? I would build them like this.

"""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
<-- That way to outside............
XXXXX.XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
"""""""X.X"""""""""""""""""""""""""""
"XXXX.XXXX"""""""""""""""""""""""
"X...X.X...X"""""""""""""""""""""""
"X...........X"""""""""""""""""""""""
"X...X.X...X"""""""""""""""""""""""
"XXXX.XXXX"""""""""""""""""""""""
""""""X.X"""""""""""""""""""""""""""
^ The shops were in the 3x3 "." spaces. There were rocks right in the little hallway that lead to the path outside but they still said "no rocks"
legend: X=wall .= cleared space "=undug rock
Sorry about sloppy diagram.

Looks like the lack of rock thing and tileset are not related. I'm sorry about jumping and calling glitch. Can anyone tell me how the shops there would be unable to get rocks for crafting?

Edit: Messing with the diagram

Mosts workshops have a few unwalkable spaces.  The configuration you have likely made it so the dwarf can't walk into the shop.  When you set the shops look for the darker colored X's to understand which parts aren't walkable in that shop.

Yes those shops you mentioned ahve tiles like so

code:

Mason:    Craft:
X_X        XX_
__X        X__
X__        __X

Heh forgot the important part:

X = non walkable
_ = walkable

I think... it's pretty close to that if it is not that.

So what was happeneing was your poor dwarves could not leave thier stations to go get the rock.
