Finding magma vents
« on: May 09, 2008, 09:49:00 pm »

Howdy, I am using regional prospector to help me find a location with magma. I found a place that did, but unforunatly, it was a magma pool. Is there any way to know which one is which? I really don't want to stick with volcanoes because I prefer a flat map. Thanks in advance.

I think sites with an igneous rock layer, like felsite and obsidian, would have a better chance of magma pipes and such.

Actually, it might be exclusive to those.

What's wrong with magma pools? Forges and smelters don't use up the magma they're sited on, so a pool should last indefinitely unless you're planning on doing something like injection-molded construction.

Anyway, one thing I've noticed is that magma is a lot "denser" on small worlds than it is on large ones - that is, the percentage of regions that have magma is greater. So fire up a "smaller"-type world and see what you can find. I'd recommend avoiding "pocket" worlds as they tend to be missing important amenities, like being able to trade for bauxite or silk.

My reason for finding a vent is that I need the magma to replinish. This is because I will have a stone shortage and don't want to use traders to get it.

Is there a tool that allows me to expose all of the z layers on the map?

Generally with DF Prospector, '~' indicates a magma pool.  The double squigglies indicate a magma vent.  A slight difference, to be certain, but an important one.

Stone shortage? Most people have trouble getting rid of the stuff.  ;)

To reveal all levels of the map grab the tweak utility off of the wiki. However the reveal module can only be used after you've embarked.

Actually, '~' doesn't mean that it's just a pool. It can be a vent too as I found out while playing on a tundra biome. It just might be located underground. So an area with two '~' has a high chance of another one being a vent.

If you want to know if the thing is indeed a vent and not just a pool without cheating, just embark on a 2x2 area that includes the magma vent/pool and have your seven miners dig the thing out if it's not already reaching the surface. If it's just a pool, Ctrl+Alt+Del out of the game and shut down Dwarf Fortress without saving. If it indeed IS a vent, do the same as above but this time make the area as big as you want and embark as you now have nifty unlimited source of magma.

Thanks guys for the tips. I have found a perfect place to build a fort and it has a vent. This should provide me with all of the stones that I need.   :)
