So a few friends of mine are coming over in a week or two, but we'll only have my terrible laptop to play games on. I've got two keyboards, and possibly a controller as well, so I was wondering if anyone knew any good two/three player games that could be played on the same computer?

I'm mainly looking for games that don't require too much investment, but not so arcade-y that they can't be played for an hour or two.

I'm also not looking for hotseat/turn based games really, unless they were really fast paced.

Broforce is great fun. Good, long campaign, tons of characters and $15 price tag.

Nidhogg is a two-player swashbuckling game; it's a 2d platformer where you must get past the other player to reach their side of the map, but if you kill them they respawn in front of you.  The mindgames and fencing elements can be tricky to get down, but you can pick it up well enough in a few minutes to have a lot of fun.

Thanks for the ideas, I had completely forgotten about those two. I've heard great things about both of them.

I was wondering if there was anything a bit less arcade-y though? I'm not sure exactly what I'm expecting to find, but just something a little less platform shooter.

The Pixeljunk Shooter games are more puzzley, and I think - emphasis on think - that they can be played hot-seat.

Crypt of the Necrodancer is a rhythm-rougelike (it makes sense when you see it) that supports two player local co-op (in fact all of it's multiplayer is local, since lag would play hell with a rhythm game). It's a ton of fun and I've personally sunk over 12 hours of gameplay into it already (a fair bit of it in multiplayer), and it's not even close to being complete (as in the devs are still adding bunches of content, not that it's not playable).

Great suggestions - I've heard good things about Necrodancer but couldn't remember what it was called. One of my friends is a big fan of that kinda game so I think they'll love it.

What about strategy games? I have vague recollection of some sort of strategy game which could be played with two controllers/miceees.

Skulls of the Shogun has local multiplayer and is a damn fine game.

There's always Worms...

...though last time I properly played Worms was back when Armageddon came out so yeah, I have no clue what the newer games are like. IIRC 3D versions were pretty "meh" but Worms Revolution from 2012 seems quite decent at a quick glance.

There's Hammerfight if you have two mice, but that might get repetitive.

A quick google search and I see... "Lara Craft: Gaurdians of light". I've never played it but I seem to remember people saying it was pretty good.

I think I played one of them and I don't remember it being terrible, I just missed my favorite features of Armageddon, which were the level editor and the custom game settings.

Nuclear Throne, its an arcadey rogue-likey top down shooter where you play as mutants in a wasteland fighting levels full of increasingly dangerous enemies.

Its in beta so there are some rough edges.  Most of the game feels very complete but the co-op is decidedly not, there's one character for example who flat breaks it (they can put themselves and a small radius around them in slow motion... but it doesn't effect co-op partners, so you basically get to move at 3x speed).  I know it works if you have a wired xbox controller and mouse+keyboard, not sure about any other setup.

If you've got more than 2 players just pass the controller on death... I'm sure it will come often enough   Unlike Risk of Rain you can bring people back in like 1-5 minutes, and you both level up equally so death isn't nearly as painful.


As a separate suggestion, assign soldiers in Newcom, pass the controller (or have one person enter inputs), and have consensus decide the excess soldiers.  Basically you each play 1-2 soldiers out of the squad.
