I found Demo3 a lot easier then Demo2. More then ever it felt like, MAX ALL THE SLIDERS to win.

The only difficulty in democracy 3 is rolling the dice to not get assassinated every month.
My favorite thing about it is
>Maximize welfare state sliders
>Socialist Utopia achieved!
And by favorite I mean not really.

I think OP would like supreme ruler 2020. It's pretty great economically, my main gripe with it would be how broken international diplomacy is, basically all the AI who don't go to war will end up best friends but even a peaceful player struggles to make one or two allies.

If you're willing to enter scifi territory, Galactic Civilizations II lets you create your own race (or several, making the rest AI factions).

Have you checked out Imperia, a game currently in development which has a post on the Other Games board? It's pretty much as close as you're going to get to this in 4x sci-fi form, and the creator has some really interesting ideas.

As far as what's finished; GalCiv2 would have my vote, but I know it's not a Nation Simulation game. I've personally never found any of the Democracy games or 'geo-political simulators' any good at all. You either end up having nothing happening and tweaking things bit by bit, or you end up with ridiculous stuff happening all the time to make up for the tedium.

Distant worlds is probably the best 'galactic empire' simulator, but the cost is very high and it's not without it's faults.

Another vote for Distant Worlds if you are willing to open up your requirements a bit. Also, Galctic Civ III is in Early Access and is pretty good. Supreme Ruler 2020 was mentioned, but you should know that many people have trouble running it on modern systems. Ollobrains recommended Supreme Ruler series over Geopolitical Sim series, which just goes to show you that it's going to come down to personal preference. I found Supreme Ruler to be seriously limited and on rails most of the time. Mind you, that is the only way to make a game about running a country fun, as having complete freedom and realistic modelling means feeling like nothing happens or doing something powerful and having the whole game go apeshit and end in a fireball.

The genre is wide open because nobody can figure out how to take it from a deep sim to a game. It may not be possible. It's essentially Street Sweeper Simulation 2015.

Eh...

Despite objections to it, I wholeheartedly endorce Paradox games.

Each one has their own feel to it methinks.

Crusader kings has a more political intrigue feel, making sure that while your country remains stable, your bloodline doesn't end due to a lost battle or election. Or assassination from your brother who was mad you're king :P

It lasts from eight hundred AD to the mid 15th century.

Europa universalis, sadly, I can't say much on. Haven't played it.

Victoria focuses more on the economic and imperialistic side of the world, beginning in the eighteen thirties and ending with a possible WWII around the corner. This one, considering how it was my first series I was able to understand, is my current favorite.

Hearts of Iron focuses more on the build up to the Second World War, focusing more on war. IMO, it's the easiest to get into due to its rather short timespan of 1936 to 1945/1960(forget which).

Apologies if this /does/ end up being massively disliked :P

Paradox games (CK1/2, HoI and EU) are great, but they're more like advanced risk than a proper nation/empire simulators. I've never played Vic though, and I've heard this is different (as others have said).

The Anno games are quite good in terms of being not focussed solely on combat, but they're not very deep sims.

I want a game where I can simulate playing as a nation, like Paradox Games, but I don't want a Paradox game.

I saw this, but I didn't know if he had played all the Paradox games or not. More than that though, as soon as a question goes out onto a forum, other people will be looking at the topic who have been wondering the same thing (I've been looking through here for suggestions!) and so it's worth talking through the options just in case someone else is wondering something similar.
