Nation simulation games?
« on: September 11, 2014, 01:23:53 pm »

I want a game where I can simulate playing as a nation, like Paradox Games, but I don't want a Paradox game. Also, PREFERABLY able to create your own nation, doesn't need to, but preferably. A game like this is NationStates.

I don't know much about nation-leading games, out of the two i have enjoyed :

Old but still great, Hidden Agenda that pits you in a southamerican fictional country that just got out of a revolution deposing a dictator, you're the first elected president and have to run the country while avoiding to make powerful enemies outside and inside .
Run great with dosbox and even now very enjoyable.

There's Shadow President too, but it's not much about running your country (in the game case , it's the USA) but leading its relationship with the other countries of the world, and avoid failing so much that you get a nuclear war or be assassinated, works great in dosbox too.

There's Supreme ruler 2020 and cold war. But they lack a lot of the simulation and could use being a bit more dyinamic to feel more alive than a generic rts with a lot of players. One of the bigger problems I had with these were that no new countries could form (or come back to life) leading to a steadily declining number of countries.

Distant worlds is a space 4x that feels kind of alive with the private economy and so on. But they charge a rather high price for the game (not as bad as it used to be, but still an investment).

I've played Superpower 2 a long time ago, and while it was kind of fun it did feel very incomplete and the ai was very passive, or sometimes not there at all. Wouldn't recommend that game.

What I would recommend is Victoria 2 from paradox, at least if you didn't explicitly say you didn't want their games. It has a lot of political content with actual population, resources/market and crises etc.

Only one I can think of that's not already been mentioned is Geopolitical Simulator 3. Was largely forgettable, though I had fun with it for a few hours.

Paradox seems to be the only company offering quality nation simulators.

The game and all its expansions are now packed into 1 on steam.   At 60 bucks.  Worthy of Triple A pricing?  In my opinion, yes. (As a person who bought every expansion before it was all combined.)

SimCountry is amazing if you like excessive detail.  It's a free longform MMORTS game, but surprisingly not awful, where you manage everything from your country's infrastructure to its military deployments to the major state-influenced corporations in it (and people can also pay to play as multinational corporations instead.)  I gave up on it because it was too much work for its enjoyment - and this is coming from someone who player Aurora 4x for years - but I can see how people who are into games like that would like it.

I wouldn't actually recommend Democracy 3, personally.

Democracy 3 is sort of simple, and abstracts out all of the details, like the world map, a list of major cities, any and all forms of warfare, the economy, the list goes on and on.  It is good, just not the detail I want.

Democracy 3 does account for the economy to an extent, and abstraction is really the name of the game as far as simulations go.
And since NationStates was given as an example I don't think abstracting away geography is a big concern.

Superpowers 2 is still one of the best and the Steam version fixed almost all of the bugs. The other, more recent one is Masters of the World. Masters of the World is the third Super Powers game, which are also known as Geopolitical simulator. They can be boring or incredibly hard depending on if you are doing it right or wrong. Playing the right way is painful and nothing happens because properly running a country means keeping things in balance, which means rarely acting and only acting in single degrees when you do.

If you do things the right way people may think you have done nothing at all.

Then there's the Tropico series. Which is not so much a nation simulator as a "Third World dictator simulator", but still...

superpower 2 but its 10 years old and has bugs.
Geopolitical simiator series but again full of bugs, no developer support and expensive.  Basically highly lacking depth and id avoid it
Supreme ruler ultimate is coming out.  All their existing titles being updated to the new engine, it has surprising depth, about to go early access probably the best of the bunch

In more abstract terms democracy 3 opinion is mixed.

I spotted an ambitious kickstarter for another game but it didnt get up

Theres nationstates of course.

But surprisngly this space is very sparcely populated
