Battleship Commander
« on: September 10, 2014, 05:53:07 pm »

I remember seeing this over on SpaceSimCentral a while back, and was recently reminded of it.  Surprised to see it still in active development.  Seems like it has some promising ideas:

Looks like something from the "my spreadsheet has a physics engine in front of it" category of game.  I'm a sucker for that sort of thing.

All those screens of information make me feel strangely aroused.

I share this sentiment...I am a bit of an information whore in simulation games

After watching gameplay, I am sold. I just read the whole Lost Fleet series this week and any newtonian capital spaceship combat simulator is welcome.

It's late right now, but I think I will want to keep an eye on this later. For some reason I'm a sucker for these sorts of games.

This looks fantastic - exactly my kind of game. My only hope is that they flesh this out into a proper game, rather than just a sort of 'mission' simulator.

Artemis bridge commander has the same kind of problem. Whilst it's an awesome game for a while (and pretty much one of the only truly co-op  games where you need to work cooperatively), the lack of overarching game play makes it only fun for short bursts really. There doesn't need to be a story, it just needs to be more of a mix between the ship detail and the open universe of a freelancer/X3 space sim, or at least have some sort of end goal.

With enough work and polish, it could have been a forgettable flash game on Kongregate.

Oh, hey, there's ssomething to download. I didn't expect that. I will check this out later today.

Looking at the screenshots, it looks like it'll take awhile to wrap my head around it.

Played this briefly last night. First impression is, holy shit, this is awesome. Can't wait to see where they go with this.

I realized I've seen this before under the name "Starship Sim". It has certainly progessed. However, my Gauss cannons don't seem to fire.

Did you load ammunition? Are you at an alert level at which they are online? Did you put turret engines on them?

I could not make manual targeting work, but auto selected targets let my guns fire.

Maybe similar issue?  I'm probably just doing something dumb with the manual targeting.

It seems like the best tactic is either missile/rocket spam, which are relatively expensive, and pushing debris fields at things.  I found it pretty much impossible to be armored enough to survive closing to engage with large cannon and it's damn expensive to get enough power generation and capacitance to run magnetic weapons.

Is there anywhere to buy hydrazine?  NERVA's are nice if you're concerned with efficiency, but I'm not if I'm trying to close to engage with something spraying fire at me.  Those hydrazine engines are tantalizing.

No, it's pretty alpha.

I really like the armor simulator, though I wish it had foamed metal and things like that.
