Wait, isn't this the MUD where one of the first actions you can do is rape orphans?

No, this is the MUD where one of the first actions you can do is rape clones.  :P

I'd be tempted to come back to this, but most iterations of Hellmoo I've played were completely ruined by assholes, particularly the SA goons. Games with near-limitless amounts of freedom are great in some ways, but unfortunately there are always people who take things too far. A complete lack of harassment rules, the ability to break into a person's home and take everything they've ever collected over the course of their game-lives, and the fact that group numbers are king in combat all combine to create a disheartening experience for people who aren't ready to suck up to whatever the dominant group du jour is.

I actually started up a corp to help newbies in the early days of InfernoMoo. It was very successful at first. The goons killed our guys and took their stuff when they saw us, but they did that to everyone.

Then a bunch of our newbies banded together and successfully killed one of the goons who'd been killing them, and took some nice gear from him. This led to the CEO of their corp demanding we return all the guy's stuff, or they'd hunt our guys until they drove us off of the game, as they'd already done to another corp. And that's pretty much what happened.

When I talked to an admin about it, he said it was like prison - you had to bend over and take it from the biggest guy around. I decided I didn't want to play a game that was like being in prison.

I haven't been in the game too long, so I asked a corpmate who has been around longer (Baphomet) about this. Here's her reply:

It's definitely changed a lot for the better over the years and the admins are more than willing to actually listen and take things the players say into consideration, even if it may seem outrageous. The open PvP makes people think before doing something unwise, and typically people leave each other alone for the most part with the exception of a very select few individuals (goobai). Subtracting the futile feeling and tedium of character growth has helped wonders and it feels like every day the game gives promising messages of growth in the right directions. There are a lot of people in powerful corps devoted solely to protecting the weak and driving off the unpleasant people who try to take advantage of the rules and their greater power over others. It's something that is gneerally just not tolerated by a majority of the playerbase.

How's the Goon and blind populations? I'm sorta wondering if Benaron is still lurking around out there. To many Goons and I'm unlikely to play, since they seem to love sucking the fun out of games for their own twisted enjoyment.

Haven't played in a year, but I feel like it may be time to get the strap on, flash whip and some magspikes...

Benaron has been immortalized as the new dan asty. IIRC he's a VASTLY nerfed variant of Asty though.

Thoughts on rifter. Holy crap. Yes, it requires blink like levels of focus to be decent. Yes it's stressful. However, you travel as if you were projecting. Oh dear, I just had a thought.

There's no goon corp or anything like that anymore.

Not really sure why I registered on here. I suppose it's worth noting that InfernoMOO is by far the most excellent iteration of the game I've come across, and I played GilMOO and then HateMOO before settling on Inferno.

A friend of mine and I founded a corp (CDYN) the moment we got there, said friend being the one who dragged me into it and convinced me to play in the first place. I've fallen in love with the place since, but I have to admit there's a couple darned problems that honestly suck. That is, custom corp hq's have like no security, and abom was nerfed into the dirt so that it's pretty much pointless when there's superior racial mutations like vampire. It's sad. I've always wanted to be an abom and I had been building up my character for it specifically, but then I learned abom is garbage nowadays. What a shame.

But! We've all got New Vega to look forward to. Huge, greater-fc sized area that'll be very promising. I can't say much more than that, but it's one big step towards Inferno becoming more of its own game.

Don't let the two things I said deter you from playing. It's still so much more fun than the others.

What exactly does Rifter do? I like to have a general plan for my characters as far as mutations, and it sounds... interesting.

Help on the 'Rifter' mutation:
----------------------------------
You gain the ability to open rifts to the astral plane, allowing you to travel instantaneously through obstacles (except doors) to a destination. Like a clairvoyant, your greater presence in the astral plane will create large disturbances of psychic energy, which is harmful to your well-being and can be detected by other psychics.

Because you can tap into another world, this greatly increases your mental capabilities. You are also able to force other rifters who are rifting in the same room as you into the real world, potentially stunning and damaging them. Be wary, as other rifters will be able to see if you are rifting or not!

Also, because you are essentially one of the astral dimension, you will take damage from EMP, like a spirit would.

Requires:
 * clairvoyance
Skill Modifiers:
[   focus        +1   ]

Armor Modifiers:
[   EMP        -40 to -40 ]

tl;dr it's clairvoyant but better in that you walk through anything that isn't a door when you're in shifted form. you get hurt by emp like a ghost, though. defs worth it.

Get hit by someone with ghost hunter gear, explode.

Hmph. Might stick with Blink anyway. Less predictable, more !fun!.

at least try Rifter out. It's really worth it imo. If you don't like it, a benefit of Inferno is that you can demut that single mutation selectively and then go try out something else later. The only thing it costs is 1/5 of your total xp in the form of cash and one year of aging.

edit: i don't know if it's literally 1/5 but for someone with 60k xp or so it's like 15k. I 'unno. Rough estimate.

Rifter is a short ranged blink. If you've ever tried out clair, you move THAT FAST when you rift, but you need blinkish levels of focus to go long distances. However, two key things to remember about it. Climbs are INSTANT, and you can move past anything rapidly. Guards, coventry mobs, other things. ACtually, when I get some time, I need to do other things with it. Testing things. Oh, and as of right now, you CAN NOT rift through the sky.

I played this, and I have to say the character creation system (While straightforward) is a little... duller? I liked walking around the orphanage, running around the city without knowing what to do, then either killing or screwing for the first time (Neither particularly nice), and finally discovering your past. Also, the tutorial messages aren't placed in the right parts of the city now.
