Cheap-ish router reccomendations?
« on: September 09, 2014, 07:04:58 am »

Recently my current D-Link DIR-600 (ultra-high quality, I know /s) went to hell after a rainless storm and I'm kinda on the lookout for a new one.
It worked fine for a fair few years so I might just get a similar one, but I figured I'd ask some of the more tech-savvy people around the Internets for a better advice.

(Note: It doesn't have to be anything ultra-expensive, the only other thing in this house that could benefit from a router is my phone and maybe the laptop/tablet/whatever of the occasional guests that arrive.)

I can recommend you some specs, but not a specific device:
Gigabit ethernet. There's no excuse for a network device to not be gigabit these days. If you don't use the network ports, ignore that, although you really should if possible, it's much more reliable and better latency to use a cable.
Wireless N. Shouldn't be hard to find, your old one was. Preferably 300 Mbits+
Wireless AC if you can afford it, it should have better range than N thanks to the beam-forming even if you don't use the extra speed

EDIT: Personally I like Netgear's latest stuff

Dwarven blood types are not A, B, AB, O but Ale, Wine, Beer, Rum, Whisky and so forth.
It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Linksys is/was always a very reliable brand of router for me. I believe they are now owned by Cisco.

For like a 60USD router it'll basically do whatever it needs to, all my experiences with other brands (home) routers involved having to either reset the router itself much more frequently or to reset my wireless card on my laptop etc.

Linksys: Resetting around every 2-3 months or sometimes longer intervals  8) More hassle free

Most other things I've tried in similar price range: anywhere from every few hours to every week the internet will cut out and I'll have to go fix it again  ::). My current one is a netgear (roomate owned :P) and needs to be reset around 1 maybe sometimes 2 times a month, not a problem worth 60$ to me to fix  :-\
