What are you talking about? All martial arts have the same end goal, and that's to dismember people with your bare hands after some dude says "Finish Him!", and win fights against thousands of mooks at a time. Haven't you ever played video games? :p

Any suggestions on what martial art to learn along with eskrima, preferable one that works on the ground as eskrima covers standing combat

Unless you mean heavy-metal-fu, it's Savate.

Isn't savate just kickboxing?

I'm curious about one thing: How many actual standarized western martial arts are there?

Never taken Savate, but I understand it's less sport oriented, a lot more focused on kicking, and you wear shoes while doing it. Kickboxing is not nearly as focused on kicks are you might think.

According to a brief look on Wikipedia it lists Savate, Boxing, Kickboxing, Wrestling, Fencing, Archery and a number of others I'm less familiar with.

Martial arts being "codified systems and traditions of combat practices".

I did learn fencing during high school briefly. Was quite fun and required good reflexes, though schools not really a good place to learn something like that.

would eskrima and ringen be good for learning how to fight against an armed opponent, with me being armed and unarmed in different techniques?

Never taken Savate, but I understand it's less sport oriented, a lot more focused on kicking, and you wear shoes while doing it. Kickboxing is not nearly as focused on kicks are you might think.

It does involve kicking heavily, in part due to its history, but by no means exclusively. Not sure what you mean by less sport oriented, unless you mean that it's far less constrained in order to comply with the not-utterly-brutal standards of competition - which it might or might not, there's different levels of contact, but if you go all-out - yeah, you can do some damage.

It does utilize both open and closed palm strikes, but those just aren't the primary focus of it, plus some throws and grapples.

As far as practicality goes, it's the basic hand-to-...leg? system of French police.

What is your preference?
I'm a freestyle competitive wrestler. The actual technique isn't of any use for self-defence but you'll get tough as hell once you've done it for years. :v I've also done submission, like, once. I got strangled by a national champion. ;-;
