Invisible vampires

So I've just had my elite marksdwarf with awesome stats drop dead for no reason that I can discern.

At first I noticed he was pale, so I thought I might have a vampire. I isolated suspicious individuals and then proceeded to follow my guy so I could protect him. He also had a broken nose and ears, so I switched off hauling for my doctor so he could patch him up, although there was apparently no diagnosis required. I followed the guy and then he suddenly just dropped dead without being attacked or anything. The only syndrome bearing creature I've come across so far this game was a forest titan giant bee with a poisonous sting that never even stung anyone (because of my brave sharpshooter).

So what went wrong? Did he just get bored of life and stopped breathing?

Unless you modded them to heal, I believe there is an issue with certain body parts (nose, ear, finger nails) or maybe body layers (cartilage?), where they wont heal on their own and aren't treated. Basically leading to a slow bleed out of anyone that gets those injuries.

Since you mentioned the Dwarf was pale, this is probably what happened. He just eventually bled out.

That would just... suck.

Any chance it might have been some sneaky infection? I've always had soap so I don't really know what an infection is supposed to look like.

It was inevitable It was probably due to this: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=8137. Certain wounds will never heal. That lead to the sneaky infection, in fact.

It is said knowledge is like a foul-smelling herb. It must be cooked well and thoroughly with experience to make it palatable. A young scholar's knowledge is therefore not only worthless but disgusting. -- In Dwarf Fortress you have another paradigm. Gather as much of that smelly herb as you can and toss it at your enemy, fracturing his skull through the +capybara man leather cap+.
