Checkin' chests

Why do dwarves 'check chest's?  It's a job that shows up on all sorts of dwarves, and they seem to check everybody's chests, not just their own.  Most of the time there isn't anything in them.  Does this job serve a purpose?

I think they get a happy thought for looking at them... At least, i do. WINK WINK NUDGE NUDGE say no more, then!  :D

The chest checking job is a holdover from a long time ago when there were no stockpiles and they used to pull jewelry and items out of the communal chests and wear them.  That might happen again, but for now, you get the chest checking job.
