Recommend (free?) tactical rpgs
« on: September 07, 2014, 05:58:41 pm »

I like games like Jagged Alliance, action point or timed turn based tactical rpgs.

Games like,
Ja and Ja2, and the new one
Silent Storm
UFO and Afterlight, etc
Dead state beta
Shadowrun returns

I'm looking for something new, can you recommend any to try?

UFO Alien Invasion is a free XCOM clone. It's alright.
Footbrawl Quest is a free football/fantasy themed dungeon crawler with tactical turn-based gameplay.

Here's a couple that spring to mind which you might or might not know. Not sure if they're exactly what you're looking for either.

Fallout: Tactics (barely related to the Fallout universe but doesn't have the god-awful TBS of the first two, instead going for pseudo-realtime)
Baldur's Gate (and any other Infinity Engine games, pseudo-realtime)
Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscura (less tactical, highly flawed yet one of the most interesting settings in RPGs, choice between pseudo-realtime and turnbased)
Drakensang (a sort of low budget cRPG based on the Dark Eye universe, tries to emulate the Infinity games, realtime)
Blackguards (fairly new-ish tactical turnbased based on Dark Eye)
Bloodbowl (perhaps more strategy than RPG?)

Ogre Tactics (Ot tactics ogre... can't remember) and many similar games like Bahamut Lagoon for example.
Basically you have a bunch of heroes (and maybe some foot soldier mooks) and you lead them from battle to battle.

I've played these. I am after more tactics, less RPG. The UFO clones are ok, UFO AI, etc.
I guess I've been playing Dead State alpha which crashes when returning to home base. I want to play something similar in the meantime.

Try Alien Assault (space hulk re-skin) or Frozen Synapse (not free)

Obligatory Battle for Wesnoth plug.

Fantasy universe, very Might and Magic-esque in some ways. Plays similarly to a hex-based tabletop game. Units do technically have RPG stats, but you just level them up a few times across the campaigns, and you can't micro them directly, they just get beefier if you're careful to keep a few alive.

Lots of factions that play very differently, terrain and day/night cycle play a big role so you have to think several turns ahead to be really successful. I enjoyed it for quite a while, and it's free, so nothing to lose, really.

And then, they will be weaponized. Like everything in this game, from kittens to babies, everything is a potential device of murder.
So if baseless speculation is all we have, we might as well treat it like fact.

I've had a lot of fun with Xenonauts, which is basically a remake of x-com.
Frozen Synapse, though a different kind of game, is still something that might scratch the tactical itch you're feeling.

If Dead State is on there, then you oughta like Age of Decadence as well (same engine). Although it's more story and choice driven, the fights themselves are rather tactical and generally really hard.

They actually released it?!

It's on early access, much like Dead State.

Daywatch?

Or was it Nightwatch?

Basically a Silent Storm style game (think the same guys made it, or atleast it uses the same engine) in a rather intersting setting based on books or something written by some easter european guy.

Edit:

Here it is.

Apparently there's both a Day Watch and a Night Watch.

The Temple of Elemental Evil is a pretty good D&D game that actualy went more for a turn based combat system rather then the round-based pausable pseudo real time combat of all the other d&d games, and its pretty good IMO, you can create a party of up to 6 custom characters or create just a few and recruit others during the game if you want. Its one of the best adaptations of the D&D 3.5 system I've seen IMO, if a rather limited one.

Fallout Tactics is also pretty decent, altough it has almost nothing to do with fallout canon, the combat is way better IMO.

Xenonauts is also pretty great and the best pseudo remake of xcmom out there IMO, its pretty faithful to the gameplay formula with the exception that your soldiers can never use psionics but have additional equipment options.

Tell me they got rid of the blaster launcher too and I'm ready to declare Xenonauts the best X-Com-like ever made despite having not played it yet.
