Moments that scared you
« on: September 07, 2014, 02:21:06 pm »

So, I was having a good time, making a new fortress with the newest patch (0.40.11), been a while since i stopped playing, but i couldn't abandon this game, when the liaison arrived (the guy that tells you about negotiations {can't remember the name}).
I kinda knew about the new rumors system, though I never cared for it before. Well, that was until i learned about this piece of information.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Needless to say I was a bit frightened and or confused; a group of artists was going to kick the crap of me. Didn't even knew goblins could lead armies.

So, what was your "oh I'm fucked moment?

I had a rumor like that come up... except it was twice as long and there were three separate paragraphs for all the places the army had killed...

I never saw the army or the leaders from the rumors, but my entire civ was basically crushed by the time I retired my fortress...

Well, in my last world I had a fortress centered around green glass production. Everything was going smoothly until I came up with the idea to dump all the useless crap in to magma. As it turns out, dumping stuff in to a magma hole in a room filled with highly flammable cave moss was a terrible idea. My forts population got cut in half in a matter of minutes. Oh well, that place was on the edge of fps death anyway, so I just went ahead and retired it.
The actaual "I'm fucked" moment got me in my next fort, since the second wave of immigrants was either stark raving mad or tantruming on arrival.

a stealthed wereopposum showed up after he crossed my security bridge, meaning I can't lockdown my fort for safety.

I'll admit, this is the first time I ever thought a fucking opposum would be terrifying.

When a fort one step from a tantrum spiral gets a noble only wave of immigrants.

Well when a fire breathing, flying, full steel made demon shows up claiming to be a god... Yeah, I was scared he'd flip out at any second.

My current fortress had about 40 dwarfs, and had just concluded a goblin siege. Everyone was outside hauling goblinite while the two surviving soldiers ran inside to equip new helms or something.

Werebeasts are either horrifyingly bad, like a well-timed weremammoth attack, or hilarious, like when my axe dwarves were charging the wereiguana, and he changed into a fourteen year old human boy, ran into a cage trap, and was placed in my dry moat. Moat full of werebeasts anyone?

I haven't had a scary army; when the liason showed up, he told me about an army called the Dimpled Doom. I can only imagine that it consists of adorable, deadly toddlers.

The worst I had was in 0.31 when I had a fire-breathing demonic diplomat, similar to StagnantSoul's issue...

and then, as he was leaving, a goblin siege came. Mounted on cave dragons.

Cave dragons, if you're not aware, are fire-immune.

The whole map went up in flames. The goblins all perished, of course, but a siege's worth of cave dragons duking it out with an indestructable force which was using an attack with devastating consequences to the environment, but no effect on the enemies he was actually attacking... yeah.

They kept fighting for almost a whole in-game year before the demon finally defeated the last of the cave dragons.

A tough demon is stronger than a siege, with a bunch of cave dragons... And some people have conquered Hell. It's too bad we can't tame and train captured demons.

My scariest moment was when one of my dwarves transformed into a werebeast in the middle of my dining hall... By the time my military got there (they can't have been more than 20 tiles away), 35 were dead... Mostly children

Wereskinks.  After what happened last night, they scare the tar out of me.

Time to roll up a new fort.
