Something about the current map's settings makes the game unplayable for me. I get 1-3 fps and the game occasionally locks up. However, the previous map ran fine. Could one of the mods be causing problems?

I've seen a fair amount of boats running on the server.  Going by the openttd reddit, boats without bouys are horrific for server speed.

Yeah just mentioned this on IRC as well - not using buoys frequently enough is awful for the server. I reckon it should be a rule to use buoys frequently if you're going to use ships at all, and generally advise not to, given how easy it is to lag the server down with a few ill set-up boats. Meanwhile, we had almost 3k trucks and trams and almost 300 trains going around in one company, and it was all good, compared to what it would of been with 20 boats that don't have buoys on them (ie, previous s2 session).

Uh. That seems to be my fault then. I'll try to fix that somehow.

What do boats do so badly compared to the others?

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Buses and trains can just follow the roads/rails, planes go in a straight line, but boats have to work out their own way around things, which is apparently very slow.

sacked all my ships. now game is... sort of playable, but still hellishly laggy. I'll try to reduce road vehicles as well.
but maybe map just got too big?

At what distance should I start using buoys? I have a few ships without a buoy, but the two harbors are probably less than 40 tiles apart.

EDIT: I added 2 buoys in between hope it helps. It's only 36 ships though.

The guys on reddit say they should be used at least every 10 tiles.

New server soon? I'll be up for that, or even if it's the old server I suppose.
Lots of mods to install though :/

You just need the right openttd.exe version, patched or otherwise.
