Unnecessarily long back story go!
Vampires. Ghosts. Zombies. Werewolves. If you heard your government was spending tax dollars to fight off such "threats", you would rightfully be outraged. But what if such threats really existed? What if you where a government agent, maybe even president, who discovered their existence? You would, of course, attempt to prove it.
In this world, that only lead to a lot of bodies piling up. In this world, all those things and much more exist. Long ago, select groups of people managed to figure that out. But they couldn't find out how to fight it, not openly. Thus, secret societies took it upon themselves to defend America and elsewhere.
You may be familiar with the Pinkerton Detective Agency, and what it had done historically in America. If you are particularly well read, you may even know that it was formed by two Free Masons, in the local loge.
What you may not know was its true purpose- to investigate and remove paranormal and occult threats to America. Pinkerton and Rucker where discussing the actions of several vampires in the area when they decided to fight them themselves. Rucker, nervously asked "Why, what if they simply kill us in our sleep?", when Pinkerton is said to have replied "Why, my friend, then We never sleep!", giving the organization its motto.
All went well for years. The Pinkerton agency was able to deflect and remove many occult and strange threats to America, even getting an open government contract under the cover of mundane work. That lasted only several years, before popular opinion against the Pinkerton caused a law prohibiting it. Most of the charges where fictional, caused by their powerful enemies, though a few where bound in reality.
That didn't stop the government from paying them, after seeing them work. The government still gave the Agency money, but now had to keep quite about it. The mundane aspects grew during this time as well, starting two almost separate agencies, the "goon squad" strike breakers and the secret detectives. The mundane aspect grew less and less powerful, with new laws and police procedure dulling their effectiveness. The Occult detectives, however, where able to get even more powerful. They where able to take over any case, get any information or backup they needed, simply by showing a special business card like a badge.
A lot more history happened, but in the end, the two groups broke up. In the 1960s, the Pinkerton Detective agency removing the Detective from its name and becoming a mundane security company to this day. The Occult side, however, became the Allen Detective Agency, after Pinkerton's first name, as only people on a first name bases with him would know his true cause.
The Allen Agency continues to this day, where it may face its biggest challenge yet...
In this game, you play the member of a local Allen Detective Agency, focusing in the supernatural, or as it says on your business cards, "Strange and Occult". Normal people will probably look at you funny, as will most law enforcement, but there is an air about you that makes everyone treat you with respect.
Some people come in the front desk with private jobs, most of which are false leads or jokes. The real jobs of the Agency come from the US government. Not openly, of course, the ADE is an open Occult Detective Agency now. No, they leave a box outside the door, filled with grenades of holy water with a note saying "Two Vampires Nearby. Smoke them. $20,000", or a text with "Werewolf, Blond. Take alive. 30k. Silver cuffs in your trunk"
You will have to act as a detective, finding leads and information. Track down the criminals. You will also have to act as a powerful weapon, defeating these super powered badguys with nothing more than a your gun and your wits. The true detective can do both, even if not actively on a job...
