Though she wished to join the Vashean military when she was young, a muscle power (though not endurance) condition prevented her from adequately serving alongside the knights, her poor eyesight made her unsuitable as an archer, and she had no magical talent whatsoever. So instead she joined alongside the army as a camp follower, tending to the soldiers in an administrative manner instead of fighting in combat during the war against Stalrom. She would've probably been forgotten there had she not discovered a hidden talent of hers to form mental images of her surroundings based on sound and smell alone, both also being far above usual human limits, which allowed her to detect an ambush by Stalrom soldiers that would've devastated the army she was serving in.
Since that day she has earned at least some renown as a scout and then a spy, and Prince Alec decided he could use her special talent to avoid any ugly mishaps that might arise from delving into monster territory without a solid eye (or ear) to find hidden enemies. For Erin's part she is extremely thankful, wishing to protect her new master and help him achieve his goals.
