My first science: Swimming while sleeping
« on: September 05, 2014, 07:56:02 pm »

Inspired by things like dwarven child care, I decided that the best time to take swimming lessons was while you sleep.

You can call it a bedtime shower, or a wet dream, or whatever. Point is, Urist no longer has to go to bed afraid that he'll be dragged under by the dangerous carp tomorrow.

As I iterate, I'll try to post my findings and best solutions.

So I've only just begun messing with pressure plates and using logic gates, and it's got my head all spinny and wishing I'd have paid more attention in my architecture-level computer engineering courses. Does anyone have any great resources to get refreshed on how things like state diagrams, logic gates, computing delays etc. work?

So far, I've found out a few things about the dwarven sleep cycle:
1. The effects of sleep are instantaneous: If they wake up, they are recharged and ready to go.
2. While sleeping dwarves can be washed off their bed into more useful places, even through wall grates. But don't worry. If he starts off in bed, he won't be mad about waking up on the floor.
3. Being in 4/7 water will not wake your dwarf if he's already asleep. However, he'll still gain swimming experience and appreciate the waterfall dumped on his head. If he's not asleep, he might try swimming straight up into an atom smasher.

First thought is that this should be the official title of a DF illustrated children's book; 'My First !!SCIENCE!! (and the adventures of Urist)'.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

I don't care. I have discovered that if you spawn elves this way, cats will chase them down and eat them.

obviously we need to devise a system that washes sleeping dwarves from a dormitory  to their workshops while removing the water after the deed is done.

I feel like an aquifer embark is mandatory for this project, though a river may be acceptable, but more difficult.

THIS IS RELEVANT TO MY INTERESTS!

I...  I have a lot to think about right now.  There's so much science going on around my head.

Will dwarves remain sleeping in deeper than 4/7?  Will poor swimmers start drowning asleep in 4/7, wake up, and climb out of the water?

Hrm. They don't wake up. That leaves me to find a new device to wake militia dwarves when they're sleeping in the barracks mid-siege...

You can, however, use it to find out who's a vampire- vampires can't drown.

So it's kind of like testing for being a witch, only the opposite.

"Ok, we've got a vampire in the fort. Herd everyone into a room and flood it. Anyone who drowns is innocent."

Hmmm, maybe not such a good test. ;)

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

This is amazing.  Swimming dwarves opens up a whole new set of fortress and defense designs.
