Does food/water encumber you now? v.4.10
« on: September 05, 2014, 03:32:35 pm »

I notice that I have 26 water and 10 food. In v.34 this would slow me to a crawl, but I see now my speed is showing 1.0.

Can someone briefly explain the new speed/encumbrance mechanics?

If you have 500 units of Roc meat, that WILL slow you down.

I didn't play adventure mode much in 34.11, and when I did, it was an adamantine colossus sort of thing, so I can't really compare.

Not sure how 26 water and 10 food would have slowed you to the lowest speed in 34.11, unless you had very low strength.

In 40.11 when you find yourself carrying more and more food/items you'll see your speed drop from 1.000 to lower and lower percentages.

The lower your strength the less you can carry.

I meant a figurative crawl.

I do have high superior strength on this char.

Did you even play 34? That much food and water would have been a death sentence, and I maxed out strength every time.

Anyway, the new thing is that it stops you from running as fast as possible.

I did play 34.11.

And to test, I just made a dwarf in 34.11 beginning with superior strength/high agility, 1256 speed. He picked up a rope reed fiber bag which had 59 fisherberries. Speed drops down to 783. Dropped all the fisherberries. Back up to 1256. He went to a stream and picked up 50 water in his rope reed fiber bag. Then he went back to pick up 10 fisherberries. His speed was still 1256.

That was 34.11 vanilla. No other actions performed.

The more readily available food source, meat, is much heavier.

Yes, meat is heavier. Still 50 water and 10 meat would only drop speed by 200 or so, which depending on your character's total speed, may or may not be significant. New character starting speed of 1600 dropping to 1400/1300 is not all that bad. New character starting speed of 1000 to 800/700, is less than good. That might be a death sentence, might be hard labor, or nothing at all.

You do realize that the standard procedure for adventurers also includes getting a full suit of armor, right?

With all that, you barely have the ability to carry enough meat for more than a week.

The original topic is about only food and water affecting encumbrance.

That full armor drops speed due to low armor skill for beginning adventurers isn't being addressed here, or 34.11's item stacking issue where the order of items picked up occasionally affected encumbrance.

It'd be great to discuss any of that in another topic about total encumbrance for human/dwarf/elf characters with regard to playing strict rogue (as powerlevelers really don't need to think about encumbrance).

I think one unit of meat from a larger animal has more mass. It's possible that means it also fulfills less hunger per unit, but I'm not sure, and if it does it's not directly proportional to the biomass. So I usually butcher smaller animals like snakes and wolves etc, and from larger animals I take eyes when I can get them. Saltwater crocodile eyes make a great snack. I wish it was easier to get plants since they're lighter. I've only been able to find edible plants and fruit by trading.

You also have to take stack size into account. The way the game calculates the physics of stacks of items is really weird.

So, to be clear, my attack speed is not being affected? Is there a way to check attack speed in v.4?

You should attack roughly the same. If you find our advice to be misguided or want to play it safe, you could also drop your backpack whenever you get into a fight.

I could, but I was wondering if anyone had a greater understanding of the new mechanics.

Does move speed affect jump speed, I wonder?
