How long does it take for one to get to this skill level in Dwarf Fortress?

Several hundred hours for most.

And how many times do you lose in those several hundred hours?

Heiterverzweiflung. Not a legit German word so much as something a friend and I made up in German class once. "Carefree despair". When life is so fucked that you can't stop laughing.

read through the whole thing, eagerly awaiting more.

Great stuff. i learned much about the game from just reading this, especially in terms of handling aquifiers. the way you explain mechanics in detail really makes this a worthwile read.

Just realized what the deal with the troll is.  He's too close to the door.

Can't the troll break down the door? Secondly, can't you let it in now that you've got a cage trap ready? And lastly, trolls aren't actually thaaaat tough. They get knocked out in only a couple hits from unarmed dorfs (strictly personal experience though).

I think Tacomagic has it right for why the troll can't break down the door and it's the theory I've been operating under for a while now. I could remove the door myself, but it's a risk that doesn't really have any benefit at the moment. A troll in a cage trap is worth about as much to me as a troll just standing there. And sure a dwarf MAY be able to take out the troll, but if they don't a single dead dwarf can easily kill off my entire fortress (never mind the troll itself).

The troll is clearly just peeking through the peephole, spying on the dwarves. It's harmless with the trap there, so why worry?

What's the zombie grizzly bear's trophy name? I see it's named Emrinek or something now.

I really wish someone could draw the zombie grizzly and Wordsanks together. BFFs in undeath.
