Before i submit a bug report, i wanted to ask if others had this issue where they only attack war dogs will perform is scratching, rather than biting and shaking as you would expect they should do almost exclusively.

Strange, i have never seen one of my war dogs bite once, yet scratch hundreds of times. I'll have to do some Arena testing.

I've had this, too.  Mind, I had several in my last fort scratch some yaks to death.

A ridiculous amount of testing and haven't seen a War dog bite once.

When dwarves first started training dogs to be war dogs, they discovered that the aggression that is trained into them cause them to become too dangerous. They were running around the fort biting random dwarves. So the King decreed a new policy, and now all war dogs, as part of the training, have a muzzle affixed to prevent any biting.

The idea was that the muzzle would be removed in a combat situation, but when the dogs' handlers see the enemy, they forget about removing the muzzle and just charge, so the dogs end up only being able to scratch in combat.

It's one of those unintended consequences things.

Or maybe it's just a bug.

Have them killed. Nothing solves a problem quite as effectively as simply having it killed.

I think this is a closely related bug to the older bug where dwarves wouldn't use there weapons. This seems to effect other creatures as well. Something is seriously buggy with the code that determines which attack a creature will choose to use where they tend to favor just one attack option over and over and over again.

Yeah, I have a grizzly that really likes kicking. It kicks more than bites or scratches, but when it does those, there's normally a dismembered goblin left behind.

Dogs don't really scratch irl, so I don't know why they even have that attack.

I get the same problem. I think it makes war dogs useless.

IMO dogs should only bite. And latch on HARD.

i had a legendary axedwarf get killed because she insisted on pommel striking over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over
and never once used the blade
until she passed out from exhaustion
her opponent had a helmet and every pommel strike was totally ineffectual
then her opponent stood there trying to stab her in the head over and over and over and over and over but her helmet deflected every shot
until the opponent passed out
then a zombie came up and shook her and she died

I had a legendary axe dwarf do similar, but he was hitting with the side of the head, which was actually effective, somewhat. Broke bones once in a while, and when that happened, switched to hacking.

Normal dogs have no problem biting, but War Dogs seem to still have the muzzle on from training, making them FAR less effective.

There should be a check. Basically the code says "hey, after 5-10 attacks, I have done no damage. Time to switch attacks!" Or even just switch up if it is doing damage. If after 10 attacks something isn't dead then the attacker needs to be doing more damage and try something else.

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow dwarf is either a fool or a coward. Whoever can not take care of themself without that law is both. For a wounded dwarf shall say to his assailant, "If I live, I will kill you. If I die, you are forgiven." Such is the rule of honor.

That's a good idea.  I know next to nothing about coding, but you pought to suggest it Toady.  if it's viable and he likes it, maybe he would use it.
