New uses for lead?
« on: September 04, 2014, 07:45:27 pm »

Hello all!

So turns out on my new fort which is all underground at the moment and on a pretty much flat terrain is going well, I don't unfortunately have much to make steel so i'll be doing most of mine through trading because it seems I have a ton of zinc based ore.

But, I do have a huuuge amount of lead producing ores. So my question is what can I do with it? I'm currently thinking of just using it to train metalsmiths and such, but I am also considering using it to build maybe some sort of tower as a challenge to myself and just for some fun, but is there any suggestions as to what I can do with it?

Lead bins may seem counter-productive, but when your inevitable end comes, you could go there as an adventurer, and stuff won't have moved around so much. That and metal crafter training is about it.

Lead coffins springs to mind as probably the best use.

Otherwise, minecarts made of lead are particularly nasty as part of a rail-gun.

I use it for tables and chairs, because eating with/on lead sounds dwarven and poisonous.

Statues, cages and chains.  Your prisoners should had to endure the weight and poison of lead, and lead statues sound cool.

Now that I think about it, the bars would also make rather nasty ammo for a minecart shotgun.

If you have other metals as well, you can create Lay Pewter to use up some of the lead. It also makes a very useful minecart for water/magma transport, as the weight helps counter liquid flow disruption of movement.

Lead Bars also make a nice ammunition for minecart shotguns.

Use it for flooring areas where you expect invaders to fall down a lot. Fall damage is calculated based on the weight of the landing material, so making the floors out of lead will increase the effectiveness of death pits and certain trap hall designs.

Lead grates are approximately the same thing as windows.

I've got a ton of galena, so I've had a lot of lead too... generally I just make it into chains, so if someone escapes prison they still have to drag a heavy chain around everywhere... also because I don't want to waste my silver on chains when there are war hammers to be made...

Weaponized minecarts are probably the closest thing to a useful purpose for lead. You can also use it to train Metalcrafters and Blacksmiths before you let them work on more rare/valuable metals.

Then maybe appoint a noble who likes lead and let them enjoy the happiness boost from their crappy lead furniture.

Hmm... Impromptu trap anyone? Pressure plates attached to a hatch cover a few z's up, with a lead statue on it? Or a really heavy stone statue, like cinnabar.
