A danger room... FOR BEARS?!?
« on: September 04, 2014, 06:05:45 pm »

I was thinking while I watched my military dwarves dance for my entertainment !!train!! in the danger room, could I set one up for the hardier animals? Say, I have a giant lion, a grizzly bear, and a dragon. Could I set them up with their own danger room? With less spears, obviously. I was thinking a 4X4 room, with three training spears per square, with statues on the edge, could I train my animals in dodger and fighter skills? Would the dragon retaliate to the traps with dragon fire? Would they simply be pummelled to death? I think it's time for some !!science!! if nobody has done this before.

I think the reason danger rooms work is that wooden weapons have no power to get through armor...

I don't think it would work on unarmored animals, even war dogs get minced in the traps. However, I may be wrong, so someone test it and find the results, I don't think my army of emus is hardy enough for war... or !!SCIENCE!! of this calibur

Ugh... I can't test it with the dragon... He just got his face ripped off by a roc. Guess that's what I get for using a 100 year old dragon.  :'( I'll test with the grizzly and lion. Once I get my computer back, ONTO THE !!SCIENCE!!

Put all the animals you have into a 1x1 room and lock the door. If its crowded enough they will constantly bump into each other, and cause attacks. I have no idea if this will train the animals, but it will certainly cause your animals to fight. I am trying this with War Lions, but its just for containment of cubs, not intended to train the lions.

With DFHack, I could change one creature to another, no?

You could use DFHack to change the creature, but I can't remember the exact steps to transform the creature using the gm-editor.

In order to gain skills, creatures have to be capable of learning. Though they can still train their attributes.

To train skills, they must either be [INTELLIGENT] or have [CAN_LEARN] or possibly [SLOW_LEARNER]

But you can just add it yourself, or give them higher natural skills.

If they could learn, then you wouldn't be able to butcher them.

Oh. THANK YOU TOADY!!! But I was hoping for this to be some leap in dwarf-animal fighting relations.

So Strength, Agility, Endurance and such will go up in the lions as they fight each other? Sounds like a win even if they aren't training Bite and Dodge.

Oh yeah.  :) Then it's still good! More agility= more bites in in less time. Endurance= more durable. Strength= the difference between biting through copper and biting through iron. LET THE !!SCIENCE!! COMMENCE! I'm going to try multiple woods for spears, seeing if it makes any difference, and how many can be safely used. I'd imagine a dragon can handle more damage than a dog.

I've seen things small like cavy boars be utterly dominated by children, so I'll start with wolves and dogs.

It's a lot harder to get animals to fight when crowded in 40.xx.  In fact, I haven't figured out how to do it.

That said, I haven't tried all that hard.  Think the most I had on any one tile was like 12 animals.  No fights.

If you really want to crowd a room, turkeys are the way to go.  Once they hatch a clutch, you've got on average 12 little poults ready to go.  Breed 3 turkeys all at the same time, and you've got plenty of little trainers all ready to rock.  Just... don't expect them to last super long against a bear.  If nothing else, it'll help determine where the break-point is where fights will actually start happening.

If you can find a breeding pair of alligators or cave crocodiles, those would be even better.

Bumping around causes less fights now? How depressing... I guess we could just throw a hostile animal in from above. A boar or weasel or such.
