Question, Frumple: to which game(s) do you refer when you say "Infantry" and "Combined Arms"?
This'un. CA was one of the zones (basically games/maps within the infantry engine) that popped up during the initial freeinfantry period, and it is/was kinda' freaking awesome, imo.

Infantry in general was some of the best multiplayer gaming I've ever experienced. One of the best engines of its sort I've ever seen, and leveraged better than just about anything I've seen as well. Hella' quality, that thing.

Also the gun from cave story that lets you fly with the recoil, and the polar star from the same game, in its last iteration.

The eye of omoz from dota 2, a sword for Doom that comes with custom animations, and I happen to own one.

The anti materiel rifle from fallout new vegas, along with every other sniper rifle.

From Dark Souls 2: The claw weapons, the dark crypt sword (a huge sword akin to the Dragonslayer from Berserk), the twinblades and the sacred chime hammer.

Dakkon Blackblade's Blackblade from Magic The Gathering.

DF's mauls, hammers and maces in the new version, which made blunt weapons useful again.

Hammers in Warhammer Fantasy and Mordheim.

A pike and a galleon mortar? Now that's some terror from the high seas.
Also the Sol blade from Golden Sun, The Lost Age.

I'm more of a sword person. I avoid using guns if I can.
And I'm assuming magic/lifeforms don't count here...

So far the game with the most 'visceral' weapons I've played is probably Red Orchesta: Ostfront. Firing guns in that game was satisfying and the guns 'felt' life actual rifles.

I was coming in to say this.  My favorite gun is the K98 in Red Orchestra.  The nice thing about the ww2 setting is that the sniper rifle is just a standard infantry rifle with a scope, and if you don't suck you don't need it.

My best moments in RO2 are all when I find a secluded spot with a good killzone, zero in the entry points, and just pop people.   In the granary level I got in some spools with a vantage on the side of the building and killed like 20+ people, most of them knowing I was there and trying to get me but it didn't matter cause I had every viable firing position pegged and would kill them the moment they showed their heads.

My second best moment was when I got under a stilt house in one of the Rising Storm maps with a BAR as the banzai was overrunning the village.  I died and we lost the village but they paid for that shit.  I must've gotten like ten kills in less than a minute, popping people through those flimsy walls.  Finally got caught reloading.

Very good overall, very meaty gun mechanics for sure.  Realistic and visceral death animations. Every time my brother sees me playing a game he asks if it's fun to kill people in it and that's a weird question but I get where he's coming from.  A lot of games your guns feel weightless, people kind of flop and fly through the air, they feel weightless.  People in RO2 slump and drop very satisfyingly when you shoot them.

I haven't played RO2 as much as I have RO1 but I get what you're saying. It was always a great feeling being the most powerful/effective force in a battle using the supposedly 'least ideal' or most common weapon, which is why I disliked RO2's focus on automatic weapons over the 'rifle squad combat' of RO1.
There's always been something to having to use additional inputs in order to operate your weapon I.E. pulling the bolt back with another mouse click, pumping a shotgun with an additional click, or holding/pressing reload to load individual shells, that sort of thing. In RO in close quarters with a rifle there was always the question 'do I chamber another round or go in for the rifle butt/bayonet?' that created intense moments that can't really be replicated by other games.

That brings me also to Receiver from Wolfire. The experience of interacting with your gun is the name of this tech demo thingy and it does it in a pretty enjoyable way. I wouldn't mind if games would imitate some aspects of it.
This'un.
Are you trying to make me cry? =(
Really miss Infantry Online, despite never being good at it, it was damn good fun all the same.

Technically there's still some independent servers running. Freeinf took back up the mantel, last I checked. S'just kinda' sparse insofar as playerbase goes :-\ E: About 40 people playing a skirmish map right now, actually. No clue how many are speccing, though. Zombie Zone's even up ;_; If only there were a good 150-200 people to play it.

I was actually pretty decent at it -- not one of the best, but pretty regularly carried a squad or did some major contributions for larger teams. SOE's treatment of Inf earned them my unending and infinite hatred. Never will they get money from me, and if I can help it neither will Sony.

But yeah, for thread appropos material, Infantry had/has death-dealing hoverboards. Ramping over walls and lakes and whatnot and then eviscerating people was great.

The only issue with RO2 is that it tends to be pretty one-sided.  Like if I'm not gunning people down the moment they come into view, they're doing it to me.

A lot of maps are just shooting galleries for teh defensive side, like that one in the woods that's just a giant open field for two thirds of its length.

Or Iwo Jima which is just bullshit.

Off the top of my head, Crissaegrim from Symphony of the Night.

And that's slowed down.

The Gauntlet of the Necromancer from Heretic.

Also a personal favorite. Not only the look of the them, the sound is what everyone remembers. You heard that BBEEWWWWWOOOOONNNN when you pulled them out and your brain was like "Alright, time to fucking destroy shit."

Personally, I like the Eyelander from TF2. There's something satisfying about ramming into people and then stealing their head. Also, the Eternal Reward is fun as Spy.

The DP-28 from RO2 will always have a special place in my heart because of that one time I got set up in the church on Spartanovka and mowed down about twenty guys before I died. Love most of the RO2 guns, really.

The Lightning Gun from the older Quake games - it wouldn't have been as fun to use as the rockets or something, except for that amazing sound.

The old Laser Rifle from Red Eclipse.  It was generic fast-projectile, slow-shooting sniper weapon, but then someone had the idea of giving it a big AoE burst when not zoomed in.  That combines strangely with the bad lag to make it incredibly satisfying to use, in a way I can't explain.  Unfortunately, the burst was removed again recently for something silly like "balance" or "intuitiveness".

The Tribes 2 Spinfusor was also great, because it had a great set of noises, discjumping and shooting for midairs was fun, and that frozen after shooting moment before the disc started going fast gave it this sense of power.

For that matter, the Fusion Mortar from that game - the ballistics were perfect to be able to aim while skiing and you could one-shot somebody with a well-timed shot, but it was still difficult to use, and it came with the iconic Big Green Boom.

Quake 3's machine gun. Shoot and shoot and shoot and shoot forever and it never matters if you miss because there's always more ammo for more dakka

Chicago Typewriter from Resident Evil 4 for the same reason as above

Dragon's Tooth from Deus Ex. Not even mad that it breaks the game rather bad if you're even a bit sneaky.

Halo 2 Battle Rifle. Headshot machine.

Perfect Dark. Just about any weapon, except the landmines and grenades and the DrugSpy. Honorable mentions:
  • Falcon 2: The most badass "basic" weapon in any game just because of the sound. Also, scopes and silencers and dual wielding.
  • Phoenix: pew-pew-pew lazer pistol that also shoots EXPLOSIONS
  • Reaper: Alien chaingun that can also be used like a chainsaw/meat grinder
  • Cyclone: Dual wield. Magazine discharge.

I love bows in games where most of the other people have guns.

It may seem stupid to put a bow up against guns, but they are silent, stealthy, and can be deadly.
