The best/Your favourite weapons in gaming.
« on: September 04, 2014, 03:51:31 pm »

This thread is about everyone's favourite things in video games, the things you use to kill innocent people, children and puppies the enemies you must righteously slay. My current favourite is the GRA version of the Assault Rifle from Fallout: New Vegas.

Halo: CE shotgun and frag grenade.  That is all.

Oh, fan of spears as a melee weapon.  That started with Dynasty Warriors.

Umihara Kawase's fishing lure.
Mischief maker's more or less entirety of surrounding environment.
The umbrella in that one fantranz'd SNES game that's a fairly lengthy platformer revolving around a dude with an umbrella.
That one combination of spells in magic maker that turns (or turned, no clue if more recent versions have nixed it) you into a screaming pinball of unstoppable death.
Basically everything in that one game involving mice, cheese, and impromptu social experimentation, that I've forgotten the name of -- landscape, other mice, explosives, shaman abilities, whatever.
The massive buggeroff laser in Liberation Army -- also the macross missile massacre rocket spam one.
LINE weapons in Gearhead 2.
The warlock knife in hammerwatch.
Grenade machine gun in Infantry's Combined Arms.
Plasma Cannon in several different Infantry zones.
That one weapon in CA that shot the canisters into the air and dropped irradiated death in a v-shape afterwards.
Masers in general in Infantry.
Also the man-portable artillery.
And most of the sonic based weaponry, but especially the cannons.
Probably more Infantry stuff, too. Damn but the fancier stuff in that game was satisfying.
Galaga's laser thingy. Pew pew pew.

... that's good for a representative sample, I guess. Could probably keep going for a long, loooong time.

WoT - The 152 mm gun on the KV-2
Navyfield - Any bomber with HE bombs.
Star Trek Online - Lots and lots of fighters.
KotOR - double bladed lightsabre
JK:Academy - ditto (causes much anger in multiplayer)
Planetside 2 - Banshee on the Mossie as it mows through infantry like nothing else can.
Games with Melee fighting and warriors (WoW, Skyrim and the like) - Large 2 handed weapons... preferably axes.
Battlefield 2142 - Baur for the medic and Gans for support.
Mezon Cannon in Crime cities... for some odd reason.

When it comes to contemporary games I prefer mid-range weapons such as assault rifles, and sometimes even battle rifles. WWII era games I like bolt action and semi auto rifles.
Games with a robust melee component to them I prefer 2-handed weapons, specifically polearms when available.

So far the game with the most 'visceral' weapons I've played is probably Red Orchesta: Ostfront. Firing guns in that game was satisfying and the guns 'felt' life actual rifles.
The ARMA series does some things right, particularly with ARMA 3 removing the magic crosshair, but it just doesn't have the same 'punch' as Red Orchestra does.
Mount & Blade's melee combat is extremely silly and unrealistic, but very satisfying in its own right.

I don't really have a favorite weapon from any specific game, except maybe the Zweihander from Dark Souls...so silly yet so satisfying.

(EDIT: I also sometimes like to play 'support' types, which means pikes in Mount & Blade multiplayer and LMGs in ARMA and similar games that have a suppression mechanic.)

Basically everything in that one game involving mice, cheese, and impromptu social experimentation, that I've forgotten the name of -- landscape, other mice, explosives, shaman abilities, whatever.

Top of my list for PC games would be:

Alpha Protocol: The pistol, with the ability to freeze time and queue up multiple shots.
Deus Ex (the original): The baton, for instant stealth knockouts from behind.
Aliens vs Predator: Gold: The alien's tail-stab.
Duke Nukem 3D: The laser trip-mine (combined with pipe bombs for secondary explosions), placed inside cabinets, behind a closed door, facing an elevator door, or the like. There are plenty of other memorable weapons as well.
All the Halo games: The DMR, Battle Rifle, or Covenant Carbine, depending on the game. Dual-wielding machine guns works well in halo 3 as well, but that's the only one with dual-wielding. There's also the SAW in Halo 4, which is super-effective.

Haven't really played anything with medieval-type weapons that was really memorable.

I always preferred Halo's Battle Rifle over the assault rifle you always started with.

And Zero's Z-Saber. And Travis' Blood Berry. And Halo's Energy Sword. And Space Station 13's Energy Sword.

Hm? Oh yeah, I like energy swords, why do you ask?

I will say this now... the BEST shotgun ever in all videogames is, well my vote at least, from Inversion.

It is pretty much the only shotgun worth a dang in videogames outside Doom.

All other games turn shotguns into a point blank weapon.

Inversion? You can reasonable take down someone who is 20 feet away behind cover... Like a real shotgun can.

Note: This is just for shooters... technically Shotguns from Front Mission 2 and 3 have a different purpose which is to spread damage around a mech, and a few shotguns actually do have range in that series.

In no particular order:
Brute-shot, Halo 2 and 3
Morph gun (specifically the Peacemaker), Jak 2 and 3
Umbra, Morrowind
Sword of Aeons, Fable
Chronicle Sword (and by extension Chronicle 2), Dark Cloud
Dark Slayer, King's Field 1 and 2 (US titles)
Excellector, King's Field 2 (US title)
MEC Gauss minigun, Fallout Tactics (I don't effing care if it's not officially part of the timeline, I accept the entire game for this weapon alone)
Barret M-82 A-2 .50 caliber anti-materiel rifle, reality and Jagged Alliance 2: Unfinished Business
Arclite Siege Tank, StarCraft
Ultima Weapon, FFVII
LIC-10 Linear Cannon, Armored Core III
Medium Laser, Battletech
The ACU (Seraphim, Cybran, UAF, Aeon in that order), Supreme Commander Forged Alliance
Blaster Launcher HWP, X-COM (oldcom)

I'm sure I could dig up some more nasty toys, but these are the ones that stand out the most in my head.

The rail driver: Red faction. This thing was fun to use and went through walls and one shot most thing(yes even you.)
The XM109: Arma 2 oa. It is a 25mm sniper rifle in a military sim used to take out technicals and other cars.It also has the range of a sniper rifle too.
The B-42 "Berserker" Combat Shotgun: Soldier of fortune. This game has many weapons that i really like. (The mircowave gun, the mg that shoots steam gernades, the slug thrower that is a portable cannon basicly.) but i have found nor more joy to be found then with the shotgun and the fact it blows off limbs and works at a range. It is also semi automatic.
