How to save candy armor for my Adventurer?
« on: September 03, 2014, 09:38:03 pm »

So I recently started my candy making process. I had the idea to save it for my adventurer to later claim. I wonder if anyone has tried this, and how they did it? How can I make sure it is in the fort when my adventurer arrives?

Some specific questions:

1. How can I ensure that it does not get stolen by kobolds or one of my other dwarves?

2. Will my drawbridges be down if I leave them down?

3. Should I forbid it?

Build a secret treasury deep inside your fortress, guarded by statues and slabs prophesying the coming of a mighty hero(ine). Set up a complex system of levers, floodgates, and pressure plates, so that only those who solve the clever riddles can gain access to the wondrous hoard.

And specify that your militia members have to wear steel armor, not candy.

So putting it behind a drawbridge will protect it?

I thought that all goods in the fort were strewn about the site when it was abandoned?  I haven't played much Dwarf Mode in 40.xx, so I may be wrong.

You can retire peacefully now.  I havent done it, but I think it keeps your items organized.

I would put them in a bin, an easily identifiable one if you can.  So you can spot it easily no matter what.  Items will, even if scattered, stay on the 'fortress map', never flowing off it.

Kobolds & other thieves will slip right through locked doors, but not drawbridges. The bridge is there as a last resort, really; simply putting the treasury as the deepest, most remote part of your fortress really should be enough, as the kobold would have to slip past just about every dwarf & animal in your fort--twice--in order to make off with the goods. But in case of a disaster that decimates your population, the drawbridge is there too.

I hear that putting stuff in bins made of really heavy material, like lead, will mean that it gets "kicked around" less when the items are scattered . . . if they still get scattered.

I have drawbridges going into my fort that can only be opened from the inside. If just leave them open during retire will I be able to get in?

Yes, as long as they are open when you retire.

Are you trying to do this in 34.11 or in 40.10?  In 40.10, it should not be a problem at all.  Just retire your fort (meaning retire temporarily, not abandon to ruin) and all the stuff will be pretty much exactly where you left it when your adventurer shows up two weeks later.  I have done this a few times, and didn't notice that any items moved at all in the new version.

If you are paranoid, you can put it in a room sealed by bridges etc, but this isn't really needed.  My suggestion would be just to put it somewhere convenient and easy to find near the surface, and have some of your military training nearby to prevent kobalds from stealing it in the time between when you start hauling it up there and you retire the fort.

If you are still using 34.11, then it is much harder.  When you abandon a standard fort, all items will be scattered randomly among any regions with a clear path to the surface (including items which were in locations not accessible from the surface, such as those sealed by raised bridges etc).  There are a few options:

1) Use DFHack to mark your fort as a lair.  Then items won't scatter at all, just like in the new version.
2) Embark on a location containing an existing night creature lair.  Kill the night creature (carefully) and place anything you want your adventurer to have inside the lair.  Items inside the lair will not be scattered.
3) I *think* that item scatter is dependent on item weight, so that if you put the items inside of a lead bin, they will be moved much less by scatter, making them easier to find.  I am not sure about this though.
4) As mentioned by  DiacetylMorphine, if you forbid the item before it is removed from the workshop, it will stay there, and will not be moved by item scatter.  However, I didn't think it was possible for adventurers to remove items inside workshops (could be wrong about this).  To get around this, you can rig it up so that the workshop will deconstruct when you pull a lever (make the floor under it cave in).

Anyhow, if you're playing adventure mode at all, you should really try the new version if you haven't already.

If you store the items in a moving minecart, they wont scatter. You should build a lever linked door upon the track, so that you can stop the minecart at will.

As has been said, as long as you retire rather than abandon the fort, you should be fine. There is definitely something to be said for making a secret treasure trove, though, 'cause you know what's cool? Secret treasure troves. Also, be sure to include some steel for the plate layer, since candy is amazing at deflecting blades but less amazing at absorbing blunt force...

I've retired a fortess before, it basically gets paused, everyone and everything will be in exactly the position you left it unless the place falls to ruin before you arrive/reclaim, so if you want to find it you could probably just leave it sitting on the ground just inside your entrance (or possibly just sitting on the edge of the region), then pick it up as an adventurer... that said, I don't know how adventure mode works alongside retiring, so it may get picked up by something when you arrive on the map...

That is interesting. My main concern in adventure mode is blunt force. Does that include the helm/greaves/gauntlets? I assume the mail shirt should be candy.

Dooes anyone have a link for the SCIENCE on this?
