my theory is that DC was hit by special high-tech bombs that released massive amounts of anti-IQ particles

that's the only explanation i can think of for why the populace of the capital wasteland is so fucking dumb

Also as for your FO1 guys look different from FO3 guys

Sorry New Vegas has final say. New Vegas DOES have Fallout 1 Super mutants... and they look exactly the same as Fallout 3s

I think, maybe I don't remember correctly.

Then again FO3 had a Fallout 1 super mutant too... who... looked like the other super mutants.

The reason the super mutants look like that in FO3 is because they didn't want to draw multiple character designs. It is why the Behemoth is just some lazy model that had been super sized (unless there are giant cars somewhere)

That and Fallout 3 just wanted them to be monsters essentially...

And New Vegas has the same laziness because well... New Vegas is a expansion pack sequel.
I think you're mixing up the difference between dumb/intelligent mutants and FO1/FO3 mutants.

FO1 had both stupid super mutants (like Harry) and intelligent ones (like Marcus and the Liuetenant). It's why The Master was looking for non-irradiated humans from Vaults, cause they tended to turn out intelligent as super mutants while the wastelanders turned out stupid.

In FO3 it's apparently random, and frankenmutant just turns out intelligent while everyone else is just aggressive and stupid, even though most of them were supposed to have been made out of pure vault dwellers.

As for the actual FO3/FO1 differences, the FO1 mutants had different facial structure, stance and proportions (big jaws compared to cranium, more slouched stance, hair on their heads, less insane skin pigmentation). They also had the face straps there to keep their overgrown upper-lip up and be able to talk (among those who mutated that way), while the FO3 ones were sneering all the time because angry.

I remember really enjoying the 3d environments in Fallout 3.  I thought they nailed their portrayal of ghouls and the post apocalyptic scenery of DC was solid.
FO3's portrayal of ghouls is abysmal. Feral ghouls didn't even exist in the universe until Bethesda made them up. Pre-FO3, the few ghouls that went crazy had some pretty good reasons to, like being forced to wander the desert for months on end. Post-FO3, ghouls turn into deformed zombies inconsistently and for no reason at all.

Basically Fallout 3 is an amalgamation of excuses to make enemies that shouldn't be mindless enemies... into mindless enemies.

I'm still trying to figure out how the Talon Company can afford to send assassins after me after I've killed more of them than there are named NPCs in the whole game.  FO3 is a decent FPRPG with a truly shit story.

Re: feral ghouls, I guess you could explain it due to FEV escaped into the atmosphere in DC area or with the passing time. After all, FO3 is set a long time after the bombs and most of ghouls have been around since the original kaboom. They might've started normal but have gone crazy with all the passing years. I don't buy it, but just throwing it around as a possible explanation.

I agree that FO3 had great enviroments, stuff you could find exploring was great, like a train that was transporting Chinese Americans to concentration camp. However, even the atmospheric stuff failed in regards to timeline. The great stuff you found were something you could logically find 50 years after the war, not in the timeline FO3 was set to. How could there still be unlooted stores so long after the bombs? Makes no sense.

(Edit: "great stuff" refers to stuff like those short-range radio broadcasts, not actual physical stuff)

The original storyline ending made me rage hard. You can't send a robot, a supermutant or a ghoul to pull the lever in the irradiated chamber... noooo, each of them have a lame ass excuse on how you must do it yourself and die in the process. What the fuck? That writing was so lazy I wanted to poop in a bag and mail it to Betheseda as script suggestion for their next game.

The original Fallout did a better job at sort of conveying the sheer scope of the world your dealing with as well as the danger of simple getting around. I just assume the game is sort of the Disney park version of DC.

Well if the games aren't going to attempt to fit the game in the same universe why even bother calling it Fallout 3? :P

They do as much as they could, with the sloppiness of the previous games in the series.

FO1 and 2, hold a near and dear place in my heart. They are also, good games in their own right, but they aren't a perfect game. They had lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of flaws. So many flaws that audiences of today, wouldn't stand for. And lets not forget the Bugs, so many bugs, lots and lots and lots ... of bugs and typos. So many that the game, would be decried instantly.

FO1 and 2 couldn't really decide if on its Tone or its Theme. Just an arbitrary starting point. Pretty much every facet of the game, is either broken, or incomplete. Its own story from the original two games barely make any sense. Srsly, you can defeat the last boss in FO2 with your severed mutated big toe. But hey, lets talk about creepy Vault Socio experiments because we're super cereal sci fi, oh wait, there Dr. Who telephone box. What time period is FO1 and 2 really a parody of anyway? You can't quite nail that down either... Oh sure, its lore has nailed it down, but what presented in FO1 and FO 2 is nebulous.

Oh man, did I get stuck in the conversation loop and end up having to buy Sullik again, even though hes in my Party. Whats that Sullik your Daughter/Sister is captured? That sounds like a great sub plot... oh its not in the game. Well lets just go explore FO San Fransico... oh most of the content was cut from here too.

But hey, that game world is bigger then FO3 and FO:NV, wait its not... if you actually consider the area you actually walk around your characters on then FO1 and FO2 game world, are extraordinarily tiny. They dont even really qualify as an open world. Especially not with games like Elder Scrolls 3. But hey, FO1 and 2 has a car! That you dont do really do anything with at all! You just got kinda faster on the very plain, barely detailed overworld map. At least Final Fantasy games on the Consoles, were using the fancy Mode 7, to give its overview world some interesting character, and AND it let you drive the fucking air ship. Not with Fo1 and 2, just a fucking dot, that moved faster. That car was fucking magical too, it went over all the terrains.  Is that a crappy (even in its time) depiction of mountains? Fuck it. I'm a car that sits very low to the ground. I can handle those off road conditions, even though my car was meant for city driving.

Oh man, what about that the exact same linear progression of character items for both games? Sticking with the 10mm Sub Machine gun, until you get the Plasma Cannon, then do the upgrade for the Plasma Cannon and somewhere there get the Power Armor too and get the upgrade for that as well. Oh sure, the Power Armor, is super fucking rare, and only the Brother Hood of Steel, knows its actual working but those vendors in tents totes know how to a chemical treatment to improve the armor... somehow. Sure you can use different weapons, but you use different weapons not because the game is actually designed for it, but because you get tired of playing the optimal path.

Its really hard to have a focus conversation on the mountain of flaws and bugs in F01&2, as its so vast.

And talking about making game based on that? And to modernized it? How? The game is sooo disjointed, that any direction would be alien to the series and therefore make it in some respect dissimilar to FO 1 and 2. Giving the game, any grounding, any direction, any consistent theme or tone would make it dissimilar to the series.

I am probably one of the few people who thinks the main plotline for Fable 2... was really lousy and I didn't care for it. (Well sort of... I thought the background of it was really interesting... the ACTUAL plotline was just so ugh!)

But honestly those flaws were bad but they came at a benefit that I wouldn't trade.

Seriously Cheesy

There you go... but it is fairly typical of games of that era to combine serious gameplay elements with hard comedy.

Notable series are Might and Magic, Majesty 1 (not 2), the first Red Alert, and Quest For Glory mooostly after the first (as the first veered a bit far into space quest territory).

What is odd is a lot of modern versions of the games took the hammy comedic elements of the game and super charge them to ridiculous levels.

I see no issue with this... It makes it feel like the same universe. If you want the ultimate weapon you got to get your hands on the Laser Gatling gun (though I think it was dethroned in the second)

If I remember correctly... 1950s-1960s I believe... well SORT OF... it is more of a bastardization.

Ehh I liked that joke. Matched the tone.

Are there people who like the actual plot line?? I liked some of the mechanics from Fable 2, but the plot line was really boring to me. I much preferred the one from Fable 1, even though it was flawed too.
