The whole water thing is just a symptom of the stupid design of FO3. FO1 had you as the last vault dweller entering the wasteland, retrieving a water chip in order to easily purify water. FO2 had you as the chosen one sent to retrieve a geck to save your people, with BoS and Enclave stuff. Fallout 3 decided to have you once again be the last vault dweller, trying to magically purify an entire river that somehow was still radioactive, as if water is simply either clean or radioactive. You retrieve a GECK to save everyone, and destroy the Enclave even though it was seemingly destroyed in FO2. Also Super Mutants because why not? It's just a bad re-hash of a bunch of tropes to try to stay loyal to the series but not actually having an interesting main story.

New Vegas had a much more interesting main story, with realistic political struggles being the mainstay combined with the issue of electricity (which obviously can purify water easily considering the existence of water chips). The game centers around what you think is best for the wasteland with a variety of internal struggles culminating in a battle to decide the fate of the mojave. Fallout 3's choice between purifying the Potomac and committing genocide is terrible.

Anyway I think one of my favorite is that the Mr. Bishop of NV's day is the bastard son of the Chosen One.

The GECKS were never seen in action in FO1 and 2  (we only see their results).  The best information we have on what they actually were comes from the Fallout Bible (the best source of canon information that exists outside of the first two games).

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Garden_of_Eden_Creation_Kit

And that's why I don't really acknowledge FO3 as canon storyline.  If it outright contradicts parts of the Fallout Bible, I have to question whether or not we should use it.  It gets awfully muddy if we do.

It restored the ecosystem of DC...

Something we never even saw the GECK do (which is honestly one of the most annoying things about the series... To the extent where my theory is that the GECKs don't work)
How? Everything looks the same in Broken Steel. We didn't see it do anything special, it's just a glorified water purifier that's apparently the equivalent of shamanism to the idiots in the East.

And the GECKs do work. Vault City was essentially made with one, and it's got normal grass and trees.

I think they wrote off the non-visible change in Broken Steel as "oh it's actually gonna take a couple years, this kinda thing doesn't happen overnight don't you know".

Actually, the GECK was originally envisioned to be less impressive than it is portrayed in Fallout 3. Essentially, they contained everything you needed to rebuild society after a nuclear holocaust. Seeds, enough fertilizers and chemicals to grow food no matter how terrible the soil is, a cold fusion reactor to provide tons of power, a computer full of information and knowledge, and some other stuff besides that. So relatively realistic considering Fallout's universe. It was only in Fallout 3 that it turned into a miracle in a box, that would almost instantly terraform a section of the wasteland into paradise.

And that's why I don't really acknowledge FO3 as canon storyline.  If it outright contradicts parts of the Fallout Bible, I have to question whether or not we should use it.  It gets awfully muddy if we do.

Yeah, same here. Fallout 3 is still a good game, but its story feels more like a fanfic than a proper part of the universe. By which I mean that it has an entirely new setting, but still manages to shoehorn in all of the old, iconic factions, characters, items and creatures. And also has some really stupid moral choices that are glaringly black and white. Like blowing up Megaton with a nuclear bomb because... You get some caps and EXP.

FWIW:

If China got ahold of FEV, you can bet your butt that they'd be all over making sure Japan was annihilated.  They still carry bitterness about what happened in WW2 today.  I can't see that going away like ever.  They'd probably make some super soldiers themselves and maybe even do it more efficiently than the Americans did in the west.

China seems to have gotten the worst end of the nuclear war. I like to think that the central communist government has disintegrated and now china has been taken over by warlords vying to control the few remaining fertile/not totally fucked territories and trying to unite whats left of china, something like a post apocalyptic warring kingdoms era, only with mutants. IRL, historically, China has gone through inumerous wars of unification after its central power fell either due to instability or political/military maneuvering.

But yea, if china is still somehow has some form of central government with a proper military structure, then it'll most likely be trying to wipe japan off the map. Today's chinese, specialy the ones from the nanking region, REALLY REALLY hate the japanese, with reason.

Where does our history turn into Fallout history? Was World War 2 even a thing in Fallout?

I want to know what is going on in Canada during the fallout games. I know it got annexed by 'Merica, because they had power armor and Canadians didn't, but I'd like to know what happened after the fallout. I'd like to think they figured out how power armor works and made their own. 'Tis a shame that it's never played a bigger role in the Fallout games.

Also, anyone else remember vault...11? The one where one person had to die, every year or so. And then eventually, there were five left, and they refused to kill each other. The computer cheerfully told them that they never had to, and four of them killed themselves. The last one escaped. I want to know what happened to that guy. He'd be the best goddamn companion.

WW2 did happen in the fallout universe. It is referenced in the intro, and some characters mention it at times. Fallout's history only really start to deviate from real history during the cold war period.

Also as for your FO1 guys look different from FO3 guys

Sorry New Vegas has final say. New Vegas DOES have Fallout 1 Super mutants... and they look exactly the same as Fallout 3s

I think, maybe I don't remember correctly.

Then again FO3 had a Fallout 1 super mutant too... who... looked like the other super mutants.

The reason the super mutants look like that in FO3 is because they didn't want to draw multiple character designs. It is why the Behemoth is just some lazy model that had been super sized (unless there are giant cars somewhere)

That and Fallout 3 just wanted them to be monsters essentially...

And New Vegas has the same laziness because well... New Vegas is a expansion pack sequel.

I blame being ninja'd =p

Also I had to look it up.  It was a valid question I didn't remember immediately.  I felt like it was accurate, but I wanted to be certain.  It's been awhile.

After it got annexed, during the energy and resource crisis canada was the stage of several huge protests but it was already too late to do much about it, now that the US was using power armor troops domestically to control riots and enforce martial law in general. You know how the enclave claim to be a continuation of the pre-war united states? They might be more accurate then everyone is willing to believe. The US really did become an orwellian nightmare at the time, and it was getting worse.
