No Immigrants whatsoever
« on: September 01, 2014, 12:10:25 pm »

Hi! I'm new to the Forum, so please be nice :D

I'm playing different Versions of Dwarf Fortress for quite some time now and everything is going swimmingly. But i noticed that every Game i startet in Version 0.40.05 my Fortress fails to attract ANY Immigrants. I still have the original seven Dwarves i startet with. Did i do something wrong? i Checked my civilizations, but everything seems to be in order there. Shouldn't i at least get the hardcoded first wave of Immigrants? It's really hard to have only seven Dwarves when there is so much to do.

Can you give me some advice please? Thank you :D

I had this issue myself.  check your d_init file to see if you have Strict_Population_Cap: 220.

If you only have Population_Cap (and not Strict), this appears to be the cause.  I think mine was due to a tileset I was using.  I switched over to the LNP which had the same tileset and it was fixed.

Thanks for your help! :)

I changed it to "strict" now and hope it works. I'll report back in any case :)

I think you need both tokens in there, like this:

Code: [Select]
[POPULATION_CAP:100]
[STRICT_POPULATION_CAP:120]

This is a direct paste from my d_init

[POPULATION_CAP:200]
[STRICT_POPULATION_CAP:220]

Then you should be good. I've found that a sure-fire way to avoid attracting immigrants before you reach the Strict_Population_Cap number is to completely entomb yourself in the mountain for a year or two. Even when the caravans come by in their appropriate seasons and your outpost liason checks in, do not open the gates for any reason whatsoever, and they will think that you've all died off due to a lack of contact. Once you open the gates again and are connected once more to the outside world (even if it's just to cut down some more trees), people will start showing up again.

Well the thing is I desperately need Immigrants. I try the mentioned method and hope it works. I assume I just have to wait now. Or do I have to start a new fortress for the changes to kick in?

Interestingly, I had something like this happen to me.

Had 2 migrations, then everything stopped and I get "no migrants this season blah blah."  Way under both my soft and hard caps, civilization is doing better than fine, and no ongoing sieges (never been sieged on this fort).

Yet, not getting any migrants all of a sudden.  I wonder if it has to do with that 30 tile radius it uses for neighbors.  My suspicioun is that you only get migrants if there are any spare dwarves within that radius from your civ.  If that's the case, embarking closer to your civilization center might help with this issue.   Have to play around with it some more.

My PC is getting repaired so I can't check, but I think I set myself up purposefully close to my civilization.

Could also have something to do with the insane dwarf I had running around.

More testing is needed.

How should the Immigrants know there is a crazy-ass dwarf running amok?

It's also possible that your home civilization has been wiped out; when you pick an embark site, one of the options you get with the TAB key is which civilization your Dwarfs came from. You should pick one that has lots of settlements.

I didn't say it was intended bahavior, just that it might have been a factor.  In all 4 missed immigrations, there was at least 1 crazy dwarf in my fortress at the time.

Probably just coincidence, but since I can't narrow it down, the correlation should be explored.

My home civilization is fine. I picked one with lots of sites, and I embarked quite close to them. But I still have to try with the modified pop cap. But this obviously has to wait sadly.

Typically a wiped-out civilization doesn't have 3 pages of nobles listed on the civilization info screen.  I should open that save in legends mode and see for certain that those nobles actually exist and are alive, as it could be a reporting problem.  It says my civilization has 60 some nobles, but maybe they aren't actually alive anymore.
