Depends on the mood. For a fey or possessed mood, just q over the workshop and look at what the dwarf is muttering about; "blocks" and "tree" and "ore" and things like that. Usually he'll want a specific one, in which case, check his thoughts and preferences to see what type of ore/bars/whatever he particularly likes, and try to find some.

For fell moods, he'll just go out and slaughter a dwarf and use its body parts for the creation. The..."sinister" mood, I think, is the same except you need a dead dwarf available; the moody dwarf won't go out and kill someone.

For the secretive moods, I think it's the same method as fey/possessed except it'll say something like "a sketch of a tree" rather than the dwarf actually saying it; the sketch might be in the dwarf's inventory or something, though, I'm not sure.

What if I don't have a workshop that the dwarf needs to make the artifact, how will I know what workshop the dwarf needs.

The workshop the dwarf needs is almost always the one for whatever trade skill he's highest in; if this could be multiple workshops, I'd say just try building all of 'em. (Note: once you've discovered the magma flow, moody dwarves who would normally use a plain old metalsmith's forge/glass furnace/whatever will instead require the Magma version of that workshop.)

Build workshops you don't have. The following can be used for moods:

Bowyer's Workshop
Butcher's Shop - fell and macabre only
Carpenter's Workshop
Clothes Maker's Shop
Craftsdwarf's Workshop
Jeweler's Workshop
Magma Forge - only if you have hit magma
Leather Works
Mason's Workshop
Mechanic's Workshop
Metalsmith's Forge - only if you have not hit magma
Glass Furnace

Bien stop making it harder than it is. There is no possible reason not to have at least 1 of every type of 'mood' workshop. Just build them outside if you don't feel like carving out more tunnels for them, for a temporary shop. You can trash it after your moody dwarf finishes his item or goes insane. Don't ask "OH GOD WHICH ONE?" when it takes just about 0 effort to make whatever shops you lack.

If you hit the magma river, they will no longer use the normal smelters and furnaces. You will have to have a magma glass furnace, magma smelter, and magma metal furnace for your metalworkers to play with. Even if you have the normal furnaces, they will refuse to do it.

Finally to see what they want while in the shop, hit T and look in the shop. It will display his thoughts of what he wants, one at a time, in order of use. If he wants A, B, C, D and E, and you have A,B and E, he will grab A and B, and wait for you to get C and D before he picks up E as well.

I think sometimes you just need to let a guy go. I have a jeweler right now who's possessed and has taken over a jeweler's shop. She wants rough gems (I assume, from what she's muttering) and the only gems she likes are diamonds. I have no rough gems on hand and certainly no diamonds forthcoming (not much past the chasm yet), so I'm just going to lock her in her shop and wait her out.

Besides, with the twenty four damn immigrants that just showed up I have more important things to worry about.

So unless you're really reliant on your little guy or think you could use a legendary in whatever he's taken over, then maybe you don't need to worry so much about him.

^^^ Raw glass = rough gems. Make some green glass first (easy) then try and rush through the steps to make clear and crystal glass.

VOILA, a not failed mood. Always keep some raw glass on hand.
