someone likely already asked, but...
« on: May 07, 2008, 08:20:00 pm »

ok, a few things... starting with dwarves suffocating in apparently random places...  Like in bed, or in a coffin.  the question being HOW, or WHY??  Don't get me wrong, I'm glad these (apparent) idiots removed themselves from the genepool, but it's still more than a little confusing.

Secondly, I can't seem to train dogs with some fortresses... trainers just won't do it, and no, I'm not tryin to train pups

But I have to say ya'll have already been a godsend for teaching my brilliant little slaves... I mean dwarves how not to rush out into a fight and get turned into slightly oversized porcupines

BTW what is Happy Fun Stuff and why is it called that?  Or does HFS really stand for somethin else?  ;)

every so often toady posts in the dev log that he spent the day adding Hidden Fun Stuff.  People have taken this to be a euphamisim for the end-game encounters with.. well.. that would be a spoiler i guess.

but its really not.  HFS is any little undocumented easter egg thing thats hidden in the game, like little jokes and stuff.  people just use the phrase wrongly.  wrongly is like incorrectly but with worse grammar.  thats how bad it is.

anyway, are you playing with any mods that might cause these suffocation problems?  dwarfs should not be able to get in a coffin unless theyre already dead - maybe youre only finding them after theyve died and been hauled there.  as for suffocating in bed, maybe they were there resting injuries after they had a lung wound or something.  do you have any spear dwarfs that might be sparring in their off itme?  piercing weapons do lots of nasty organ damage.

make sure you actually have animal training enabled as a labor preference for some of your dwarfs, otherwise no one will train your dogs.

What? Vampire dwarves? =) Lol, you made me laugh, why do you put them in coffins alive?

The dwarves probably thought the fortress as a deathtrap, and decided to skip a step.

But really, suffocation is one of the reasons people never really use speardwarves. Sure they can be handy for taking down creatures with internal organs but high resistance to most weapons, but training them is difficult.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

a) To minimize training accidents, I'd suggest having your dwarves spar unarmed most of the time, and only using live weapons while your leather-clad crossbowmen are at shooting practise. (IMO most sparring fatalities - red throat wound leading to suffocation etc - are when a not very experienced speardwarf takes a swing at a guy in leather armor, and hits)

b) To train a dog you need a tame dog who isn't someone's pet yet. I'd say don't make dogs available as pets (via the z -> Animals screen)

awesome, thanks for the doggie tip  :)

And nah, the one that suffocated in a coffin carried it down to my crypts, set it up... and I guess he just climbed in cause he never left.  I checked on him a few times, but I couldn't figure out wtf he was doing for the life of me.  No speardwarves though.  I like the idea, but I've noticed thier high injury rate and stick to axes and crossbows.  We LIKE crossbows  ;)

ok, if Happy Fun Stuff is quasi endgame... then I think I may have lost a fortress to one such already.  (won't go NEAR that fortress)

ohh and no mods  ;)  I'm enough of a threat to my dwarves keeping it simple.

Actually, wrestlers can inflict throat wounds also. Suffocations for me are usually sparring accidents or a failed mood killing themselves.

I'm sure people only call it Happy Fun Stuff is because they've never actually seen somebody use the proper term.
It's actually called HIDDEN Fun Stuff and is meant to be, apparently, hidden.
EDIT: Although this is just from memory.  And my memory tends to get confused.
I'm fairly certain, but I could be wrong.
