Before I get even more super defensive about the WBL thing, PrivateNomad, could you explain your reasoning around 5 times starting cash?

What's wrong with it? You roll your starting gold 5 times so you have at least some gold to spend for the Crypt.

Also, here's a suggestion: Buy a 10-foot long pole and a bag of rats for the traps.

Oh, and no more templates after you die, m'kay? We don't need people having +10 strength at level 5.

I believe he is referring to the fact that the starting cash rolls are a thing for level 1 characters, and normally higher level starts will use page 115 of the DMG.
For comparison, I rolled up 750gp starting cash, quite a good roll, which is still a fair bit less than the WBL of a level 2 character.
5*level 1 starting gold would leave a level 5 party horribly underfunded and likely incapable of coping with level-appropriate threats, since their gear will be much less powerful than is expected at that level, making it hard for them to hit their enemies, deal much damage, avoid being hit, cope with special abilities or, well, pretty much anything.
This is, of course, much less of a problem for casters, because mundanes can't have nice things.

Oh, there's an actual in-game mechanic for that? Use that instead.

page 135 of the DMG. For reference, WBL for level 5 chars is 9k g

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Oops, yes, 135, not 115.

I am confused now. So instead of the 680 gp I rolled, I actually have way more than that?

Yup. I believe the GM is using the SRD which doesn't have the WBL table(DMG only).

Oh, and I've updated my char with new equipment with the expanded wealth.

We're using standard WBL rules now, so all characters get 9000 gp to spend in total.

Also, can we use the Craft Points variant rule from Unearthed Arcana? It fits very well with this campaign, since I gather we'll not have a whole lot of downtime...

That would likely be a good idea.
