Any good new pay to play MMO?
« on: August 28, 2014, 03:42:57 pm »

One with no freemium or free to play. Those cost too much, I spent more than 1000 USD just to compete in lotr...more than a year sub to get everything.

What I want is a good, new, pay to play only mmo with no lame freemium...cause nothing is free, it all costs. When its free, you pay for it in other ways...like crappier service or game or expensive cash shop.

Is elder scrolls online any good? Or ffxiv? Or wildstar? Darkfall? Any others?

I love huge worlds to explore.

Not eve or wow...wow I played too much already. Eve isn't my type.

Mostly like trading, economy, building and exploring in games. Don't care about combat or raids. I find raids really boring.

Guild Wars 2? It's not a subscription model, but it's not free. It's pay once, with mostly cosmetic microtransactions, that can be bought with in game currency.

Mabinogi kinda fits... but its all wrapped in very annimu cutesy chibi art. And it's both simple and complicated at the same time. I'd suggest readong the thread on B12 as we have a guild there. Can't say how healthy said guild is tho because i didn't play it for a rather long time.

I can't do gw2. I bought it, but can't access email I used. Don't remember password. Don't have CD key either, lost that when moving. Don't remember username either. So ncsoft can't recover it due to all that. Not buying it again. Think my account was hacked too.

Could try Star Wars Galaxies Star Wars The Old Republic. Mechanically, it is very similar to WoW - some abilities even look to be ripped directly from the game and given a Star Wars makeover, and I very much felt like an elemental shaman while playing a lightning sorc.

Not sure if it is the mechanics that turned out off WoW or just the sameness... Despite playing WoW for years, I was okay leveling a class or two up to max in SWG SWTOR because, even though it played mostly the same, it was nice change of scenery: really, it was the constant repeating of the same instances and raids that turned me off WoW (that and Blizzard being dicks business-wise and I not wanting to give them money anymore).

It is a little free to play but mostly as a demo/hook - really it's a subscription+expansion model like WoW. The free content is mostly limited to the first 20 levels, the story quests, and some restricted instances/matches.

My biggest beef with it is the sometimes annoying-to-configure interface and the limited options for quality interface mods.

Edit: I had missed your last line. It's a very PvE combat game; I guess the story quest is a little bit exploring but not really. So it's probably not worth trying after all.

Edit2: Fixed my shameful error.

Swtor? I kinda liked it. But I like crafting/building and it was rather lame.

What about archeage?

Wildstar would probably be worth checking out, pretty fresh look on the MMO scene (imo) only thing is, it's more centered on the combat aspect (PvP and PvE)

You know, if you're really into the crafting/building, have you considered Minecraft?

Archeage or Wildstar are the only two current offerings that do anything sort of new. The whole genre is stagnated and hemorrhaging(exaggeration) players right now. There are roughly 100 million unique MMO gamers in the world, with 40 million being very active. Most are playing free to play games and almost half are non-english speaking. Those are industry numbers from a conference I attended in Korea a couple of months ago.

Wildstar is incredibly well polished and is fun. well written and beautiful. Archeage is more free-form and PVP focused. Both are good steps forward, but are not leaps forward. Don't expect any sort of groundbreaking new MMO experience. The costs are too high to take big risks. Good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for.

There are also new types of games like Trove(<3) and Landmark that take the Minecraft experience and push it to an MMORPG. Then there is the excellent Planet Explorers indie game that offers an MMORPG game experience to singleplayers. It's a fantastic game if you like MMORPG quests, levelling and crafting but don't actually care about playing with others.

Finally, there are the MMO-FPS options. Rust, 7 Days to Die(my fav), Nether and the upcoming The Final Stand(I am a consultant/stakeholder on this one). These games are played on a variety of low(er) population servers, public and private and involve PVE, co-op, PVP, crafting and persistent worlds with social interaction. It's much more dynamic than MMORPGs and the industry is betting it will replace the MMORPG.

I like Dayz style games...Rust, 7 days to die and similar all look good and suffer one huge problem. If I want to just play with me and one friend, I have to spend 100s on a server...heck I don't want to spend 1 on a server. I think its cause I come from games like AOE 2 (Age of Empires 2) and the like...make a server for free and have fun. Otherwise me and him would be playing them and not worry about MMOs. And when we DO find a 0 population server, the server owner shuts it down and it pisses both of us off and finally we gave up and went to different games cause couldn't find one for both of us.

Though he (same friend) recommended Entropia Universe since he said it fits what I'm looking for exactly, and even has space combat/travel to other planets. Told me that people just think its to make money and a scam, but he only puts in 15 dollars a month (like a normal MMO subscription), doesn't make money and doesn't care, but plays the month (wisely) and has a lot of fun/entertainment by crafting/hunting mostly. Treats it like a normal MMO I guess.

I dunno how that is though, gets a lot of bad reviews. But he said the community is better than any modern MMO he played. Might give it a shot since he already plays it.

I've gotten a lot of fun out of Wildstar, but I have to warn you it's having some problems right now. PvP got a bad balance patch about a month ago which has gone completely addressed since then, leading to mass-depopulation on many servers. If you decide to check it out, make sure you start on the busiest server you can find.

ArcheAge is entering open beta soon, which promises to be short and will be followed by launch. AA is a bit of a button-masher when it comes to combat, but it's got some very pretty scenery and lots of tradeskill stuff to do. Technically it's freemium. Free to play, but you need to pay the subscription fee to really take part in any of the tradeskills, which are essential to making money and therefore progressing in the game.

You don't need to pay for a server. The size of the maps are huge, endless in the case of 7 Days, that you and your friend can play alone on a server with others. Right now Rust is a bit smaller and others can interfere, but the supposed relaunch will mean much larger areas and resolve your issue. I seriously recommend 7 Days since it's the cost of 1 month subs for an MMORPG and you will never have to pay again, even if it doesn't solve this problem, you will be happy. Also, Planet Explorers is perfect if you want to play with one other friend. You can play on a player hosted server co-op and there are tons of quests, massive crafting options, huge enemies and lots of lore and exploring. I really suggest you consider those two titles even though they are slightly off base for your original request. Good luck!

Wow, sounds like Planet Explorers has come a long way. I looked into that game a while back and liked the idea so much I paid for it, but was waiting for it to develop further before actually playing. Maybe it's time...

Darkfall ruined mmos for me, it's amazingly fun and contrary to popular opinion it is not a PVP gank fest. , but since the release of Darkfall unholywhores i'm reluctant to say it's the same. nevertheless with the new plex system in darkfall i'd suggest checking it out.
it's very much not a solo game though so find a guild or make one
