So this is a thing now?
« on: August 27, 2014, 04:05:36 pm »

I was looking at fortress stocks in 40.10 and saw a listing for ....

Books.

I know Necromancers write books, but can fortresses have books now?

That's been there since 0.34, maybe 0.31.

Books were added in version 0.34.01 along with Interactions, so they wouldn't have been in 0.31.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I have NEVER, EVER, had books, in my dwarves' good listings.

Necromancers had books, but never, ever, in my forts.

am I more clear now? Look.  A book.  IM MY STOCKS.  My .34 forts NEVER had this.

Technically speaking - your stocks list is showing a lack of books. So you still haven't had a book in your fortress.

Kidding aside:
Forts can be retired.
Adventurers can obtain books, and leave them in retired forts.
Forts can be reclaimed.
There you go.

I haven't checked since I'm not doing bugs until after the release (well, I'm doing bugs, in the additive sense).

I never used them, but Masterwork includes books that can be used to increase skill.
I think it was an interaction that allowed a skilled dwarf to write books and essays, and an other that would allow a dwarf to read said book and learn from it.

Masterwork mod books are tools, not actual books. Quietust is correct, books have been in vanilla DF for a while. You can usually find some in fort mode if you embark on fortresses, tombs or towers.

I Know he's right, I had just never seen one in a fort before, ever.

It looks like version 0.34 didn't have a "Books" category in the Stocks screen - maybe that's why "Slabs" showed up twice. They were definitely a thing, though - invading Necromancers would bring books with them.
